Just one of the reasons I invested in a home gym. The dudes deadlifting the weight up and just dropping it to the ground made a ton of noise. I slow my eccentric part of the lift compared to the concentric and consider the eccentric just as important as the concentric.
My focus is on hypertrophy though so the range of motion and time under tension are important to me far more than just lifting as heavy as possible. I guess for competitive lifters where the weight getting lifted is all that matters have a different focus and thus just drop the weight. For instance, if you're bench pressing for hypertrophy you're not going to see that major back arching thing that's done to shorten the range of motion just to maximize the amount lifted.
Then there are ego lifters... they only know they want to get big, but don't really know what they're doing. They basically mimic what they've seen and don't really have their goals set in stone as a science. Those are the guys that actually hurt themselves. Bad form, and trying to lift more than they can handle. These are the people you're probably talking about. They see the cool youtube videos of the lifters dropping the dumbells down and as I mentioned before, they mimic that stuff.
I hate it when people do that, and yes some guys mostly do that. Their massive ego needs to show in the room to everyone. "Look at me! I'm so strong! Argh!" Possibly damaging equipment is wreckless and careless. It shows that they're too lazy to slowly put down the weights. Also it's like a little child needing attention.
They have no idea how to lift weights properly. Going down slowly is half the workout. You don't let gravity win, you control it slowly to get the most out of the workouts.
Awesome answer! I definitely agree that setting the weights down is half the exercise. It just makes me laugh when people (men and women) swing the weights. They have no idea that the negative part of the rep is half the rep that's actually important! 😆 But hey, swing away if it makes them happy.
Another thing is, lighten the weight and do slow controlled reps sometimes. You'll find out just how weak you actually are. 😄
Thanks for the answer! Love it! 👌
My boyfriend drops weights all the time in his home gym. He says it’s because he goes to failure and sometimes he literally can’t set them down because his muscles are so weak. I love those big arms tho.
They're too weak to actually lift that weight properly and control it back down, but they think dropping em makes them BIG.

For the same reason women use the record function on their phone at the gym. Attention. I get that you and some people in this post are having a communication disconnect between repping until you DROP the weights which is perfectly acceptable and people can kindly piss off if it bothers them. I think what you're describing is the person throwing the weights which is fucking stupid. Anyone who lifts weights regularly knows how unpredictable those weights are once they get some speed. To be fair you could probably word the question better to differentiate the two.
I worked out at a gym that had a big sign that said"If you can pick them up , you can put them back." The guy that owned the gym i was working out in opened a second gym and one morning I worked out there to check it out. I was talking to the owner and we watched these two kids doing arm curls with the brand new dumbbells. They dropped them onto the floor and they were the kind of dumbbells that had spot welds that held them together. The weld broke and the plates spilled all over the floor. The two kids were laughing about it. I watched the owner quietly walk over to them and grab them by the scruff of the neck and escorted them out the door.
If they can’t hold them up from fatigue, sometimes it happens. Otherwise, placing the weights down as quietly as possible is part of the workout. Plus it’s disturbing. It can be dangerous if weights are dropped haphazardly and take a wrong bounce.
I have no idea but... I can imagine that sometimes, when you've done multiple repetitions with stupidly heavy weights, they just want to let go of it as easy as possible, maybe...
maybe they're upset that they couldn't complete their set of reps... lol
maybe they want your attention, though...
you never know... lol
the "legit" reason: because for optimal muscle growth, you gotta go to the point of failure. what are you gonna do at the moment you're failing? obviously since you're failing, youn can't just lift the weight anymore. so dropping them is really the only option for certain exercises like dumbell chest press for example. also with deadlifts for example it can be a good way to avoid injury while slowly letting the weight down.
stupid reasons that also happen: there's lots of dudes that do it for attention or cause they just like the sound of the heavy thing they just lifted crashing on the floor.
SO YOU KNOW THEY ARE BIG STRONG MAN WHO MAKE BIG STRONG NOISE
His shoulders are fantastic.. 😁😁.. They are going crazy.. Goals right there.. But I've never seen anybody where I go to the gym throw the weights.. I sometimes drop mine after I almost can't even hold them up anymore.. Maybe they are showing off, maybe they they used up too much energy lifting and decided to do that..
Because it's the old way of working out, used by champions too.
Been decades when I was last in the gym. But during my training days, you would keep the sets going until you're dropping the weight.
Then next time, beat that number.
Of course dropping the weights doesn't mean you leave them laying around. That's just messy.
It’s heavy and they’re exhausted and sometimes they like to show off like they’ve been breaking their butt hard
I never drop weights. . it disturbs other people and it wrecks them
Thank you
Because they are lifting weights, not going their to show off their new outfit. They exercise until their muscles fail not until some cute guy looks at their butt.
I find it funny how all the weak guys act like the strong men that train to failure are trying to get attention... If you just do a bunch of sub maximal sets and don't train to failure, you are literally wasting your time at the gym. You aren't challenging yourself at all and aren't doing anything productive. Which begs the question, why are you even there? Oh yeah because you want to be seen by people... Classic projection...
Explain this to me, oh ye wise one.
Why are they throwing them with force to the ground? Clearly they had more reps in them.
I see plenty of men in the gym who lift far heavier than any of these attention seekers and they always set the weights down respectfully. They're also 2 or 3 times the size too.
So, tell me. Do you know for a fact that these guys are training until failure? Or, are you just defending them because you do it yourself? 🤔
Actual reason is when you have heavy weights which is lifted, settling them down slowly can break your wrist due to the weight, so it best to throw them down to avoid injury
Weight make noise. Big weight make big noise. I make big noise so people look me and see I make big weight.
I don’t do that, but I’m too busy doing my own training to care about what other people do in the gym. My question is why people can’t mind their own business?
Try to see if you can carefully, with complete control... place the weights back down after lifting to absolute failure... it's impossible.
It’s normal for guys to make lots of noise just to get attention nowadays.
Because they all try to appear stronger than they really are.
Any decently conditioned fool can pick it up but it takes true strength to control it while you put it down
Attention-seeking behavior - much like the animalistic grunting and staring at themselves in the mirror.
They're the "bros" who want attention like an Instagram female model
Yep it's mostly just for attention to show that they're "alpha"
Annoying and arrogant behaviour.
I've seen people drop weights but never throw them. I don't get the idea of either.
You need to keep in mind how above average the douchebag ratio is at gyms.
Because you’re suppossed to push until the muscles fail
You mean you see guys just drop them for fun?
Because they are working out until they can't hold on to the weight anymore
Yep I dont do that I agree its annoying.
Look at me!
In serious competitions it takes all the effort they can muster to lift the weight over their heads and can't set the weight down gently, but it's not necessary for regular guys at the neighborhood gym.
They are probably trying impress you and the other women. Were you? 🤣😂🤣
