Aerobic exercise would be good for that, and outstanding for your health in general. Try running on a treadmill or jogging. Be sure to study proper warmup and cooldown technique, as that is just as important as the whole jogging part. Follow up with some resistance training and you lose weight and tone up quite well. It will take a few weeks before you see results, so don't let that discourage you.

if you gained TEN F***ING POUNDS over the SUMMER then you don't even need to think about working out, clearly you have a terrible diet and need to address that and after you have your diet nailed down THEN start working out. my advice "that you won't follow" is to keep your diet purely plants and animals.
