A few things. First of all, don’t feel self-conscious that you’re using a pad just because everyone else is using tampons. It’s whatever you’re comfortable with, other peoples experiences really shouldn’t matter. On the other hand, I also struggled with it when I was first learning how to use them. It came to my attention that sometimes peoples vaginal canals are angled different ways, for example mine kind of goes back to the left a little bit. So go slowly and maybe even use a clean finger first just to see the direction. If that doesn’t work, I recommend going to a gynecologist. I would say don’t be worried about going to an OBGYN, Because it’s better to find out early if something is a little bit divergent

I also used to struggle with tampons when I was a teen mostly because I didn't know how to insert them properly. Then I tried tampons with applicator and it changed my life it's actually very comfortable, however, after doing some research I stopped using tampons due to the risk of TSS. I feel like the materials of the tampon are super dry hence why sometimes is so hard to insert a tampon at times.

I also struggle with putting in a tampon bcs my vaginal muscles are usually tense when not turned on. When I’m sex I can handle thick dildos just fine bcs I’m relaxed. Tampons don’t work for everyone so don’t worry too much about it. Have you tried fingering yourself? If that also hurt then you might wanna ask your gyno about potentially having “vaginismus”.
Get yourself a tapered dildo. Use it to stretch your hymen. If need be, improvise. Like use the handle of a silico spatula.
tampons don't work for everybody and thats okay. it doesn't mean sex will be affected.
You know, for that kind of question, its better to ask your gyneco
