Bulking up always seemed pointless to me. I want enough lean muscle mass and strength to keep doing the things I love to do. More than that is just dead weight on a run, on a mountain bike, backpacking, climbing a mountain, skiing. And in the field you require more food and more water that you'll carry on your back. What's the point? Vanity? Trying to impress the girls? Nah, no thanks.
Plus body builders are notorious for having proportionately less strength per pound of body mass than climbers, body weight exercise guys, etc. Bulk is low efficiency.

doesn't feel good to me to get any heavier
Bulking, because it's easier and that's what my husband likes better.
Since I look like the second photo, I should probably choose the second option.
