What is the cost of permanent birth control?

Question

What I mean is, how much does it cost? How old do you have to be?

Will I be able to get it done (if I had no children?) Does the doctor have the right to turn me down?

What has the highest success rate, with the least being in side effects-stuff like that.

Tubal Ligation

Essure

Hysterectomy

etc.

Please, I would like ANY and ALL advice. Please, none about changing my mind.

In the United States, the specifics of any of those procedures will vary widely. The cost will depend on the specific procedure, whether or not health insurance will cover it, where it is performed, the type of anesthesia used, etc. My mom had tubal ligation at around age 42 (by choice,) and she paid very little out-of-pocket because she met the insurance company's restrictions. If you were to pay for everything by yourself, without any insurance and without an urgent medical reason to do so, I would assume that any of these procedures would be pretty expensive. I'd guess a couple thousand dollars, at least. You definitely need to be 18 for a permanent procedure like this (unless there is a health condition that warrants it,) and I think most credible doctors would be reluctant to perform this kind of permanent operation on any healthy woman in her child-bearing years. Even my mother said that the doctor discussed other non-permanent birth control options with her, and made sure she was really sure she wanted to get the procedure, before she got her tubal ligation- and she was 42 at the time, and had already had 3 children!

Tubal ligation is when an incision is made to disrupt the reproductive system so that a woman can no longer get pregnant. It is an outpatient procedure and when done correctly with a healthy patient, it should be very safe and cause minimal discomfort A hysterectomy is when the entire uterus is removed, and is usually only recommended for patients who have other serious medical concerns (such as tumors or ulcers) that would warrant removing an entire organ from the body. It is a much more serious operation and a woman who has a hysterectomy will need to take hormonal supplements for the rest of her life.

Obviously you aren't interested in discussing your situation, but I just want to say there really isn't any reason to take such permanent measures if you don't have to. The short-term birth control options nowadays are pretty amazing and have come a long way in recent years.

Cost completely depends on your insurance and what kind of birth control.

Some doctors have been known to give women a hard time about these things and pressure them in inappropriate ways, but just make sure to stick to your guns. Take their advice, but don't let them make your decision for you. I don't think they really have the right to turn you away unless there's some conflicting medical condition or you can't pay or something like that. Also always a good idea to get a second (or third) opinion.

IUDs have the highest effectiveness rate of any kind of birth control. Kind of crazy--it's even higher than getting your tubes tied. They last about ten years, if I remember correctly, and the procedure for putting it in isn't too invasive. Side effects are pretty mild--I think typically the most people will see is some irregularity in periods for a couple of months at first.

after my mom had my brother she went to the doctor and he convinced her not to get it done so she never but a few years later she went back and he done it for her. I don't know nore do I care about her sexual life but knowing I don't have any more siblings I'm sure it works very good.

if you don't have children I don't think the doctor is aloud to say no but he prob will try to convince you not to get it done.

If you are under 18 you need the consent of a legal guardian for any elective surgery. But since you are at least 18 it's up to you, a doctor won't turn you away if it's what you want. Getting your tubes tied is the most reliable method at about 99% success rate. It's also a very costly operation, certainly way more expensive than an IUD or birth control pills.

Usually they will be very wary of performing surgery to prevent conception if you haven't had children. I'm talking about you having to go to several consultations and usually a psychologist just to make sure that you were sure. That said, Tubal ligation is very effective. My grandma, who was a breeding machine -she had 10 babies in 12 years...just for perspective- had tubal ligation and bam, no more babies. I wouldn't recommend a hysterectomy and I doubt they'd do that unless you were at serious risk of uterine cancer. It will throw you into early menopause which at your stage in life will be horrible. I'm afraid I don't know much about Essure though.

If you have insurance it should take care of the cost if not it will probably be a few thousand dollars. Yes, a doctor can refuse you that is their choice. Most like for you have a few kids.  Like on girls said why don't your try the mirena IUD no period which you will have with the  other methods and it lasts for 5 years and is 99.9% effective.  I went back and forth between the IUD and a permanent fix but decided with the IUD since I would not have a period.  The doctor would not do the permanent one on me when I asked the 1st time just after I had my son.  So they can refuse you but I am sure you can find someone to do it.

I don't think insurance covers tubal ligation but I could be wrong.

However, if you are young your doctor is going to try and talk you out of it, simply because it IS so permanent so that if you decided you do want kids in the future, it couldn't be undone.

The surgeries themselves are successful and safe.

for a tubal its really no age. some doctors like for you to be 18 or 21 and up while others prefer you to have at least 2 kids. I'm 20 and I'm getting the essure procedure in a few weeks when I turn 21. I don't have any kids and I want to keep it that way. they will want you to try mirena first which I did twice. you need to ask the doctors about cost and see if your insurance covers it. I have aetna and it covering mine. good luck
