The natural way to get RID of them is to completely ISOLATE yourself; go into your room, lay down with a cold cloth covering your eyes and relax. Stay away from noise and technology, and anything else that can give you eyestrain (until you feel you can bear it). I recommend doing this as soon as you get what’s called the “aura,” where you can sense it coming on by some sort of trigger. Maybe your eyes will feel sort of sore, or you will see some flashes of light, or maybe black dots will start to invade your vision (these are called floaters, just fyi. I’d like to know who named it this? I mean really? I’m not going to tell people I have pieces of sh*t floating around in my eyes…). Whenever you feel these “aura’s” you need to go into your cave ASAP. It’s not worth it to let things escalate- get to know yourself and you will be saved.

I suffer from migraines quite often and haven’t had any scans done yet, but have been given a medication for when it comes on, which I rarely decided to take just for fear of its side-effects which included some serious heart-health issues. Sometimes I do take an ibuprofen when I feel it coming on, instead of isolating myself, just when I don’t have time to relax. Doing this occasionally is okay, but obviously you don’t want to take ibuprofen all the time for a handful of reasons- one being your liver. Avoid Tylenol and Aspirin.

There are some natural substances that can aide your migraines and there is one herbal medication that I can think of off the top of my head that helps in the relief of migraines, called Valerian Root (also helps with sleep, I believe). It doesn’t work for everybody, but you may want to check it out. Coffee, tea, dark chocolate, and ginkgo- great for your blood flow/blood-vessels and when ingested with pain relievers it can increase the rate of absorption. Everybody’s sensitivity to these substances varies, don’t over-do it obviously, but just add them to your diet and keep note of your headaches. Coffee is often iffy because some people have the rebound headache from it, but I hardly ever get that- maybe because I don’t add any sugar? I’d also like to state that coffee is a HUGE antioxidant and has several benefits that a lot of people over-look. And many people also think that excess consumption is unhealthy (obviously this depends on your definition of excess) but this is FALSE. It decreases the risks of diabetes, as well as age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s, it lowers blood-pressure over the long term (decreasing the risk of stroke), and also reduces risk of dying from and developing cirrhosis. You can’t go wrong.

Above all else though- listen to the signs your body gives you. When you feel the migraine aura, either run to your cabinet or get in your cave and rest it away. Nip it in the butt BEFORE it comes to knock you out!

I know people say that caffeine causes it but that is not the whole story. A little caffeine is good when you have a migraine however one cannot drink caffeinated beverages often because that causes migraine. Various things can trigger migraines. Some people get migraines when they drink milk others get migraines with lack of sleep. So my first suggestion is to keep a migraine diary. Write down when the migraines occur and what you were doing before it occurs, that will help you figure out your triggers and avoid doing those things. For me, my migraine issues started when I hit puberity (a very long time ago LOL) and lack of sleep affects me. So make sure you are getting adequate sleep, keep stress to a minimum with stress relievers (music, meditation etc). Have better sleeping habits, no computers, tv, cell right before bed (the light from these devices keeps the body awake) Follow a regular eating pattern as well. Go to the doctor and get your eyes checked too because sometimes eye problems cause migraines due to how the light hits it. I try to wear shade outside when its too bright because bright light also triggers mine. The key here is prevention because once you get a migraine there is little you can do to get rid of it unless you take a migraine pill.

Thank you for BA. BTW I don't have migraines as much as when I was 12. Now-a-days its about twice a year. So I know you will be fine but see your doctor about it too.

You know my ex would get migraines quite a bit and she would drink diet coke...here is thing...I made her read an article about aspartame which is REALLY BAD... bottom line aspartame sticks in your system for 45-60 days...its in all gum, diet pop, sweetners and other stuff... so she agreed to be off diet coke and gum for 60 days... and actually during those 60 days she was off she didn't have a single migraine...shes addicted to diet coke so she's drinking it again, and the migraines are back!

Have you had your blood pressure checked recently?

When I used to have high blood pressure I would have migranes all the time (due to the "pressure" of the blood pumping through the brain).

The migraines may be a symptom for something else, like a food allergy, lack of sleep, too much sleep, dehydration, over-training if you workout or play a sport, high blood pressure, etc.

So the migraine may be a "result" of something else.

Sleeping, eating healthy. Basic stuff really work. I believe in pills at desperate times, but some relaxation of your mind, such as reading or watching something relaxing, comedy, good feeling film even. Avoid frustrating thoughts. But really basic things, healthy body and mind. Like for example when we do weight exercises with too heavy stuff, our head hurts anyway. Keep it simple, eat keep it healthy. :D

My personal experience with migraines (since I can't swallow pills) is to sleep (not a nap, at least 8 hours) it off in a dark room with no sound. I also ususally get a cold washcloth and put it over my eyes, that helps some. In the end I might just end up throwing up and that for the most part takes away my migraine, oddly enough.

I have had mingrains since I was ten and I agree with the people who said sleep is the best fix. Throwing up (if it is your body's reaction and not a finger in the throat) helps aswell for some reason.

I have heard from other migraine havers that feverfew pills (it is an herb and you can usually find it in the section of your pharmacie with vitamins and fish oils) helps prevent them. I haven't tried this but it is a suggestion I've heard from many people.

update: I find naps only help for normal headaches.

do you drink lot's of water? sometimes I forget to drink water and my head start's hurting because the brain need's fluids and stuff.

I know you said you don't like to take pills but I find Motrin extra strength works best out of all the pills I've tried. 1-2 depending on the strength of the pain.

Well besides trying to figure out what triggers them for you. GOOD QUALITY peppermint, lavender or eucalyptas oils either in hot water in the room to inhale or massage oils massaging the back of your head, neck and shoulders. Ginger helps with the nausea.

No naps don't help, I have migraines a lot when I get angry or nervous. Try not being so nervous during the day and try thinking positive. Stay away from the sun as much as possible, but most importantly you should not be getting mad. Anything that can frustrate you, try to stay away from anger and keep calm. Pills help very little but you can't keep taking Advil every day. That helps me "sometimes". Drink chamomile tea as well.

The only thing I can do when I get one is go lay on my bed, turn off the lights and TV and try to fall asleep. But you said naps don't work :/. Drinking tea also makes me feel better! And lots of water.

I used to get them a few times. They where always triggered by: wine, chocolate, or MSG in food. But there are others (google). Try finding the trigger and stop it, that's the most likely cause.

As for stopping them when you get them, try drinking a big cold glass of water, or do EFT: link

I guess I always needed to go to a quiet place and put a cool wash cloth on my neck be in the dark and just lay down and wait and hope it goes away soon. I know it won't help but time was really all that made it go away.

Cover your eyes with something so that it's dark (or just turn all of the lights off).

    Ice works too.
