It is very common because i used to be 260 lbs and dropped down to 145 lbs. it was difficult to keep it off and i ended up gaining about 40 lbs back and now im about 170-180. but i am nowhere near 260 again. I think its all how you want to be, you have to make commitments to yourself that you won't fall off again. it sounds to me like your dad is trying to motivate you to prove him wrong. so do it, dont let yourself get back to that weight. When i got thin, i learned to love my body and the different attention i was getting for being significantly smaller than i was. If not committing is common in your lifestyle then yes it will be a struggle.
but good luck anyhow and you need to think of your transformation as a lifestyle to be healthy and eating clean rather than just an annoying diet. ALSO dont take the easy way out because the easier you lose it the QUICKER you gain it back.

Well whether its intentional I don't know, but bc people keep people who keep weight off, keep weight off through conscious effort. he's implying he doesn't think you will be responsable and cognizant of your actions.
As long as you are conscious about what you're doing, you won't gain it back its not mystical it won't just hop back on. yo have to be responsable about what you do and how much you take in. but if you're willing then there's no reason you'll gain the weight back.
point being it doesn't just happen. you have control over the matte. that's the good news;-)
Dieting and loosing weight is great. Your dad is likely being honest with you to a point. The weight usually comes back to those that diet to reach a goal. What do you plan to do when you get down to say 175 lbs. Think about and plan for this. The weight will come back if you do not change lifestyle that added the weight. Eating better and increase activities now that you reach your goal weight. By making these changes you maintain the goal weight and convert remaining fatty tissue into muscle which does a lot for metabolism and overall health. I say lifestyle change because at any time you stop proper eating of good food in proper amounts along with activity to metabolize nutrients into a healthy body, you gain the weight back.
If you went through a regimen to lose weight and reach your goal, the tendency for most people is to feel that now that they are where they want to be they can easily stay there and disregard any more working at it. They regain the weight.
If you have made a lifestyle change and stick with it, such as changes in eating habits, workouts at the gym, etc., then you should keep it off.

Probably both. It's very true that it's difficult for formerly overweight people to keep being on that lower/healthier weight. Most people end up gaining a few pounds when they stop putting in as much effort. Basically I think he's saying that if you want to keep that healthy weight, you have to keep going. You don't have to keep losing it, but you have to keep working out and eating healthily.
But as a dad he should encourage you to keep going, rather than say "you'll just gain it back"... that comment just makes him seem a little bitter.I don't think he's being bitter.. And I don't even know how he said it, with what tone etc. He probably knows from experience. And I can tell you from mine. I've lost 24 lbs a year ago and put back these past couple months 20.. It's very hard for overweight people to maintain. For you to keep the weight forever you need to completely change your habits. If there's no willpower, of course the pounds will come back.
He is just being a dad to be honest. Making you more aware so you don't gain it back. I don't think you will. He is just trying to make you self-conscious so that you won't. My dad says I am getting fat.. when Im really not all the time. =)
Well, a lot of people do. I can't say if he was being mean spirited about it, because I don't know the context of the conversation or the tone he used while saying it.
