I've had to re-think what I'm doing with the new chess variant idea, because it turns out the classic chess pieces are too damn good compared to the pieces I've tried to make. For this reason, I have the idea of removing most of the classic pieces and just using my own pieces on either an 8x8 or 8x10 board.
Assassin (Redo)
Can move one space diagonally, or jump exactly two spaces Orthogonally. It is now locked to its starting color. The assassin can make a free move following any capture it makes. The assassin can also skip its move to place TRAPS on a space adjacent to itself. Traps prevent enemy pieces from moving onto the occupied square. Traps may only be disarmed by enemy Assassins or Rangers. He starts adjacent to the King and Queen.
Bard
Can move one space Orthogonally or any distance Diagonally. The Bard may also teleport back to any space on the King's row, but a Teleport may NOT be a capture. This makes the Bard far more powerful and versatile than the classic Bishop. He starts outside the Assassins.
Ranger (Redo Again)
This is simply the classic Knight plus a one or two space diagonal mover. He can remove traps in this version, but cannot place traps in this version. This makes the Ranger about twice as powerful as the Classic Knight. Rangers start in the position of the Rook from Classic Chess.
Queen
Once again, she has been nerfed to two moves in any direction, instead of "N" moves.
Kings and Pawns remain unchanged.
Optional:
Chancellor begins on King's side on an 8x10 board.
Arch-Bishop begins on Queens's side on an 8x10 board.

This chess variant sounds intriguing! You've put a lot of thought into creating unique mechanics for each piece. The Assassin's ability to trap and its free move post-capture add depth and strategy. The Bard's diagonal moves and teleportation offer flexibility and unpredictability. The Ranger's enhanced movement and ability to disarm traps make it a formidable piece. You'll need to test the balance to ensure these new dynamics don't overpower the classic elements. Overall, it sounds like a creative twist on traditional chess, and I'd be curious to see how it plays out on an 8x8 or 8x10 board! ♟️🌟
