American here and no. There is no sum given to someone to get married. It is customary for the bride's family to pay for the wedding and that can get expensive! However, a lot of people these days split the cost to some degree. Everything is just so damn expensive for weddings anymore. I had a friend a year older than me from school just get married and her family and the groom's family both pitched in. But no dowry like in some countries.
