Tbh, I've seen guys take out loans to get their girl a ring. I wouldn't want a guy to do that for me. Loans are for homes and other major things needed for the two people to build a happy life together, not some freaking bauble.
Traditionally, the fellows in my family got their women a bracelet for the engagement. The presentation of the wedding bands came around at the wedding (and currently, a good quality platinum nuptual band is ~$1000...). There wasn't the tacky "big rock" ring that's so popular today... more of a status symbol than anything.
A family friend was recently engaged and harrowed the guy to within an inch of his life for some crappy ring bc she got all precious about it... $50K... FREAKING INSANE... Cost more than 50% of my car payments. Ridiculous.
$50k damn... that's more than a lot of people's annual income ๐
Honestly I would want to get my partner something that represents my love for her. Something that's good quality (durable, hypoallergenic, and beautiful). I don't care for the cost of it. If she insists that it has to be over a specific amount (say $5000) just because she thinks it should be that much, then she's a materialistic girl and not the one for me. I doubt a girl I date would ever say that though ๐
And you know another friend who did the same thing -- $45K for the ring... and another $45K for the matching earrings because the spoiled brat girlfriend just wanted them -- they're divorced now...
Whenever a guy friend asks me to go shopping for a ring for his girl I always tell him to stop obsessing over "princess cut" and other crap... just get the ring that suits her hand and his budget. NO LOANS... I tell them these two stories as a wake-up call so they don't go nuts spending.
Good quality (durable and hypoallergenic) is the platinum gold band. And your taste in the ring can't go wrong since your taste is what made you pick the girl also... follow your instinct, as I always tell my guy friends.
Looool I don't mean to laugh at the dude, but it is pretty funny. She walked away with $90 in material possession from him. That's a big yikes.
There's a saying that I actively abide by. "A woman that can be bought isn't worth having."
Funny you should say that about the platinum gold. I've looked into it (just out of curiosity) and I did come to the conclusion that platinum would be the choice of what I get a girl for the frame. And as for aesthetic, I'd probably choose a raw gemstone for the centre that matches her eyes or a represents her personality. Probably citrine, ruby, emerald, sapphire, aquamarine, amethyst, or could even be diamond. I love the look of pure gold 24k, but it sucks because it's too soft and you can't wear it every day. They say 18k is a good balance of durability and beauty, but still not good if you're active. If I do get gold, I'd worry about the durability the most so I decided that 14k with platinum used as the alloy would likely be the best choice if I go the gold route. As you can see, I have a fair bit of looking into it ๐
But even then after all of those good materials are taken into account I've found many rings under $5k. I don't know where tf people are going to pay $50k for a ring. They're getting scammed ๐คฃ
Yeah! AND alimony too. Nuts. Absolutely nuts. It's why I'm also a big fan of the prenup also.
Wait to see the girl's hand before imagining more than the setting, tbh because it's going to have to be on her hand for the rest of her life, you know...
No, a wedding band 24K would be only plated... 21-24K are better for earrings and the main piece of a pendant/bracelet that's only worn on occasion. It's not meant for every day like a wedding band/engagement ring.
The $50K guy... I will tell you that was an enormous rock from Tiffany.
Oh when it comes to prenup, I honestly believe it should be mandatory, especially with divorce rates as high as they are. Don't get me wrong. If a guy convinces a girl to be a stay at home wife and she quits her job, he should pay her what she was making before leaving her job, accounting for inflation and potential increased wages until she finds another job or until a year is up.
And yeah, bigger isn't always better (at least when it comes to rocks ๐). Minimalist designs tend to look the best.
Something along these lines:
https://www.youtube.com/embed/E5fpBlmocXMThis applies only to a great guy, of course. Not a dude who's like "OK, babe. Works for me", if that makes sense. :D It's the heart behind it that makes all the difference.
Every guy's dream girl mentality. But honestly, I'd still want my partner to have a ring and probably surprise her with one after I can afford it. I like the ring concept because it's like the love and relationship/marriage is "written in stone"/permanent. It's a symbol of the love so I'd want it to be durable and beautiful. Just my own thoughts on it ๐
@HawkPerception Don't get me wrong, I would love a beautiful, valuable ring. But if a guy is working his tail off to make other goals happen, I can understand that and I'm not going to whine about the cost of the ring. I know that guys tend to put their money toward things they value, So if he's buying a lift kit for his truck while I've got a ring pop from five years before, that's not cool, ahem. :D
Yeah, but that's what I'm saying! You have every guy's ideal mindset! You're not materialistic. You would appreciate what he CAN provide.
@HawkPerception Thanks, that's good of you to say. It's more important to reach mutual goals and work together for stability than to have some metal and rock on my finger. The value lies in who it's from, not so much what it consists of. :D
I don't care much about the price.
As long as it's of real quality (so it doesn't change color, break easily etc) and I like the design of it, and he has put effort into it.
If he just went in the store and chose the most generic engagement ring with a diamond on top, I would hate it.
That's not me, and I would feel like he doesn't know me.
Would I marry someone I felt like didn't know me well enough?
No.
That's what matters most.
I dislike wearing rings so deep down, Iโd be okay with one of those little cheap rubber ones. I have 2 dream rings. One is under $500 and it has a pearl. The other is like $2600-3500 depending on where its purchased (and this is just a band tbh, not really an engagement ring since i donโt care for center rocks). But iโd likely lose it anyways. I dont think jewelry should be in the thousands.
I rather have a bracelet or dogtag tbh
As long as it's quality pricing doesn't matter
