My boyfriend said marriage is not important. Is this a common thought for young men?

I (age: 23) was casually talking to my boyfriend (age: 21) about his ideas around marriage and he said it’s just “some papers and a ceremony”. He backtracked after I seemed upset but I think he really means that. Although, I’m not upset I’m just kinda shocked. Marriage has always been such an important thing to me for my future because I believe it’s a huge commitment and it’s something I’m really looking forward to. I heard that men usually start getting serious about relationships in their 30s. I’m wondering if this is just the mindset of an early 20s man. Just curious about what other people have to say and if anyone has experiences with this.
