Should I have dumped my boyfriend because he didn't buy me a birthday present?

I dumped my boyfriend because I had a birthday party and he turned up empty handed. I said nothing. 5 days later nothing. I mentioned it. He said 'good things come to those who wait'. I still wasn't happy because all he had to do was say (on the day) I'm going to give you something soon due to ...Whatever. Instead of leaving me guessing for a week and texting me every day like nothing. When I spoke to him about it. He said he couldn't believe I would think he wouldn't get me anything, exactly!

Been dating 4 months. I've been noticing some other actions that I'm no sure I can deal with. But I do like him a lot. He has now got me something btw...Says he's giving it to me in the next few days/

I'm sure you didn't dump him because he didn't buy you a present. Sometimes, it's just the straw that spoils it all. It can be a trivial thing that ends everything. I do feel that you've been unhappy with him. I guess he wasn't trustworthy and he lied to you so you've been skeptical about all what he did.

My normal answer would be NO. You don't dump a guy for not buying you a present. But, I'm sure you were hurt for a reason and that made you decide to leave him. If you are happier now, don't get back to him. People never change.

To answer your question, no, you shouldn't have dumped him for not giving you a birthday present. I guess you have to think to yourself - what is more important? Superficial gifts or the fact that he did come to your birthday party, etc.

Although the reason was stupid, maybe breaking up was for the best. Obviously your feelings for him aren't that strong if a gift took precedence over your relationship.

Aaaaaaaah the internet. The place where we all express opinions in a way that we don't neccesarily communicate face to face. Hence my in secure moment by placing this question in the first place.

If I was a gold digger then I would not of been dating that guy (he ain't rich and prospects of being rich...hum...). Its cliched but its THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS. What I haven't said, is that this guy is reluctant to plan anything, cancels frequently and basicly 'slots me into his life'.

The point is you dumped him because he didn't get you a present on your birthday and left you in the dark about when/if he was getting you one. The fact that you cared so much about a silly little trinket, enough to spark a break up is petty and childish. No, I didn't mean you ACTUALLY reacted like that, but you may as well have. What I care about is the lack of thought that went into this situation. Not the actual present. To be honest I could not care too much about what he bought me, a card would of done. but the thoutlessness. It seems to be a pattern. He's shown thoughtlessness before. I actually regret breaking up with him and wanted to leave it longer. I just wanted some opinions, I've got some I guess.
