We have HOA restrictions that forbid garage sales save for twice a year. So everyone in the community has a garage sale at the same exact time. I've lived here forever, but this is the first time I've ever actually driven around the community looking for bargains. My god, what a complete waste of time it was. Even though I started about an hour after the start time, there was nothing but actual dusty used junk. The clothes were all outdated, the furniture being sold was in terrible and mainly unusable shape, a lot of it just looked like the homeowners dumped their literal trash on the table, and annoyingly, many of the houses weren't even set up--like one lady was like, um, we don't even have change right now or know what we're selling stuff for, or a few of them had no tables, so everything was just thrown on the ground. This didn't really motivate me at all to do any future garage sale hunting. Sadly, growing up, we used to have this absolute banger of a annual garage sale surrounding the local football stadium that everyone used to go to. I got the coolest stuff from there as a kid, but they shut it down years ago.

Most garage/yard sales are small. Few do a whole street sale but can if all your neighbors have a bunch of stuff to get rid of too. It's also a way to make a few bucks on the side if you have some nice stuff to let go of. I have seen a sale that spread over a couple of streets, to a famous one that goes across a couple of states.

You know, I actually should. I love that kind of thing, getting stuff I didn’t realize I needed til I saw it, but at deep discounts, albeit “used” in varying degrees.

But I’m also prone to buying things for the sake of hoarding it, for future “maybe” usage, lmao. Especially if it’s used. And if it’s not wasted money, it’s the household clutter. I love thrift stores. Not really for clothes as much as knick-knacks, books, appliances, sporting goods, etc. So a garage sale could be up my alley.

Two things, though: 1) I feel obligated to buy something if it’s just some person there, and it’s not in a store setting. I’d leave with at least one item every time, possibly useless. And 2) I’m not ready to tuck my t-shirt into relaxed fit jeans and be that level of “old” yet, lmao. Like it’s a thin line between desperately clinging to any shred of youth you can still possibly claim to becoming one of those people who turned into their parents in those Progressive Insurance ads, lmfao

I'll add: while wearing New Balance sneakers.

@spartan55 bro, I was going to say that very thing, but I think the young’uns are actually wearing those now. We’ve made it to be old enough where ‘dad sneakers” we’ve laughed at for decades, really ever since dads started wearing sneakers, have become cool to the tastemaking generation of the day. Mustaches are back too. I’m stunned, lmfao

That's not really a thing here. People on average don't have as much stuff and when they don't want it anymore they sometimes put it on the street for anyone to take, or they donate it if it's clothes or something or they just get rid of it. I usually get rid of things as much as I can during everyday life. And then some things that still collect over time I get rid of when I move. There are a few hoarders everywhere but aparently not enough to make garage sales a thing here. There are flea markets and things like that but no garage sales :)

Absolutely!!! In our area, there is a free "garage sale listing service" . Actually, it is sale listing email that is sent out by a company that just happens to manage some of the biggest "estate sales " (some listings with over 500 photos) in our area. As a perk for us peons, they let people post their personal garage sales and use up to about a dozen pictures per listing. I've managed to pick up several pieces of a particular brand/style of glassware I collect. Plus I'll hit the personal sales if they are within my usual driving range for the stuff I get anyway at stores that week. Our town also limits GS to 2x a year, up to 3 days each. A fancy neighboring town did the whole-town sale a few weeks ago- except the town never publicized it. I saw one of those sellers in the "listing service" or I never would have known about it.

My mom is the queen of garage sales but she only looks for paintings and framed maps. She'll also look for certain types of glassware, among other things she thinks might be old. People throw rare paintings and pictures away having no idea they're worth money. She actually has some things worth a fair amount of money!

I remember going to one when I was a kid. My mom bought me a doll but I must have dropped it before we got back in the car. I urged her to go back but she didn't. Cried the whole car ride home and haven't been to one since. Not so much because of that but just because I don't live near anywhere that would have garage sales.

    Sorry it was annoying.

You know what grinds my gears? Garage Sales. You go to a garage sale & no one ever wants to sell their garage. You go to a yard sale & no one ever wants to sell their yard.

I think they should just call them junk sales.

I have done a few times, but I generally don’t really find too much of an interest.

I’m more interested in record fairs or vinyl shops, so I’m more drawn to buying music from those particular areas than to go to car boot sales for example.

Garage sales aren't something I actively seek out, but might stop if I drive by one. One of my hobbies is lockpicking so whenever I can find cheap used locks I grab em.

I don't know like it is another countries but in my country most garages are filled with "could be useful" trash and cars stay on the street in front of houses.
