I started to think about when gas prices were over 4 bucks a gallon during the Bush administration. It was 2008 and global oil production was stagnant while demand from China and India had increased. Crude oil was almost $150/ barrel.
As a result, most people were buying little foreign made cars that used less fuel. I was in the process of buying a new vehicle. I wanted to buy another Chevy Tahoe to replace my 1996 Tahoe.
I had been looking around for a while but did not find one I liked for a good price.
I checked the website of a Chevy dealership a few towns over. This was in August 2008. I saw exactly the Tahoe I was looking for and it was sitting on their lot. The picture on the website showed snow on the ground so I knew the vehicle was sitting on their lot for at least 6 months. I got up early on Saturday and drove to the dealership and was able to find what I was looking for. I had been looking for a while so I had a good idea what these vehicles were selling for so I planned on offering 2 thousand dollars less just so they could get this vehicle off the lot.
The sales guy said that he could not sell it for that price. I wrote my name and phone number on a piece of paper. I told him if he changed his mind to call me and I would come right over with a check. I drove home and I think I was home for about ten minutes when the phone rings. It was the sales guy. He told me that he talked to his boss and he said that even though they would lose money on the deal (I bet), he wanted to get me as a customer.
