One thing that stood out in the answers is about the accents.
Do germans really sound that bad when we speak English? o.o
I was born in Germany. My mom is German...we only came to the states because my biological father was military. It's not that German's sound "bad"...but I know that my mothers accent is STRONG...so strong that some people have to listen closely or "get used" to her until they can understand her...especially someone who isn't familiar with foreign accents...many people are intrigued and like to ask her all types of questions...even to this day. College students who are taking German love to stop her and speak with her to practice. But again, to an untrained ear...Ve versus We...can be confusing...Dat...vs. That...can be hard to understand...for example, Americans may say (just a casual sentence) That is what we were going to do...my mothers accent would make it sound like "Dat is Vhat Ve Vere going to do"...nothing wrong with that but can confuse Americans...especially speaking at a normal pace versus slower so they can catch up and make the connection to what is being spoken by a foreigner :) Hope this helps.
Uhm, we have a big problem speaking the th.. Even if we know how it works. But replacing it with a 'D' is strange I think. The most ones I know take an 'S' instead? So 'sat' or 'sink', or some maybe a v?
The W and maybe the R should be easy (for younger people =P) if you know how it is spoken right.
We just speak it different here but its not a big deal changing it.
The Th doesn't exist in this form. (Its random and if we have it in a word we just don't speak the h and a hard T instead).
I actually like German accents-- but I also have an interest in their language and country.
Having known many people of that ancestry, I have heard very broad accents and soft ones.
I have no preference on the strength or thickness; they all sound very rounded and enjoyable to me. I fail to understand how people can lable them as rough-- sure, their language is very guttural, but I do not equal that to "rough."
I think it depends on what kind of german accent. There's the austrian-german accent that makes me think of the Guvernator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) which is funny to listen to, but not very appealing. I think as long as you don't sound like that, it can sound decent and sexy even. I have a cousin who has a german accent and it sounds pretty good, so I guess it's the degree of the accent, not really the accent itself :)
Here something about the sound, not the kind of words: it gives three kind of voices: 1. falsett falsett f.e. in an opera) (head.voice), 2. gutural ( the voice is locates in the throat) 3. pectoral ( the voice is very deep and is located in the breast, the bass.singers)
The English sound is higher than German, so German is deeper or darker than English.
this means the German sound is nearer by pectoral than English. So English sounds softer than German.
Really? I allready thought about this but thought it was an imagination.
Uhm, but how does this work?
If a german is born in the us for example and lives there, he has a higher voice?
By the way, the first line reveals your origin as a german =P
''It gives'' should be a typical mistake for us.
I find Russian women's accents to be quite sexy. Some have a thick accent others not so much. It all depends really.
I had a harder time understanding a UK man once. I wasn't sure what language he was speaking at first since his lingo wasn't the same as in the U.S. but I still was able to help him out.

It depends on if german was their first language and how well they've learned to speak. My great grandma was from austria and she had a really heavy accent and people couldn't really understand her (I could but I was around her all the time) That goes for any language though I also worked with a lady from italy and it took me a while to get used to her accent.
I'm German, and people always seem to like my accent. It's not so thick that people can't understand me, but thick enough to know where I'm from. I personally like hearing German accents on other people, but maybe that's just what I'm used to. I don't really know anyone who doesn't like it, but I guess different people like different things.
it makes you sound kind of...''mean''. I'm not sure whether it's cause people associate you with hitler or cause the language is simply harsh-it just sounds like you're yelling and swearing. but it can be cute if you have a soft voice.
I think you sound adorable when you speak. I love listening to Fabian Hambuechen's interviews!
My friend Denis is from Germany and he speaks with barely an accent.
He's a gymnast and I'm given to understand that he is fairly famous in Germany. He's at least a known athlete. Not to mention he's the cutest darn thing on this planet.
I pronounce his name Ham-boo-ken.
Yes, but he also takes part in some german shows like TV Total Highdiving for example. This is why even people who don't watch athletic sports could know him.
Lol, then this could be something for you too. Imagine him in bathers.. =P
Like I thought ;)
I can't really tell how to speak it because you don't have something similar in English.
The german ch is like the russian X, if you can use the info.
I would show you a link where a commentator speaks his name, but I'm not lvl 4..
Oh honey, I have seen the highdiving show... several times ;)
When you're watching Fabi, you don't need to understand the commentators.
But I didn't realize there were several episodes! I must go YouTube hunt now.
I'm going to reiterate: I LOVE FABI. Now I'm off to find those episodes.
I personally think German accents are sexy:) I have been learning the language for three years, I love the way it sounds.
I apologize in advance for any errors, haha:3
You did well, even when you didn't answer the second question ;P
The first sentence was grammatically wrong. ''Ich verstehe genug deutsch um deinen Kommentar zu entziffern'' The rest was pretty nice! The third sentence is just written in a way a german would not do it, but its not really a mistake. (You have 'have to' and 'must' in English. ''haben/habe zu is not common here, so 'm?ssen/ ich muss'' would be better ^^)
May I ask which music you use?
Oops:P The vocabulary is relatively easy for me to pick up, it is the grammar I have trouble with St times, as you can see. Yeah, and looking back- I probably could have caught the error in the third sentence, I usually do use m?ssen in that case. I usually listen to Oomph! and sometimes Eisbrecher. I love their music and they sing clearly most of the time so I can understand the lyrics.
*at times
Ahh I thought on Rammstein, they seem very famous in the US. And it sounds nice for me, but to learn lyrics.. (Heute treff' ich einen Herr'n, der hat mich zum Fressen gern. Weiche Teile und auch harte stehen auf der Speisekarte.. ^^')
Eisbrecher should be OK, but I didn't hear for Oomph for several years.
But as long its not 'Megaherz' for example.. (Singer is the brother of the one from Eisbrecher I think) Many lyrics of them are just stupid and weak -.-
I personally don't think so.
It's just a preference thing.
Like, beauty in the eye of the beholder..
Or rather beauty in the ear of the beholder in this case. :P
i wouldn't say its bad. especially if theyve been speaking English for awhile. as long as I don't have to strain myself to understand you. this one german I know says 'w' like 'v'. its kinda cute.
I personally do not like it at all, this is with strict honesty but ehh... everyone is different. My opinion is MY opinion, I'm sure many love it
Sorry!
I have had a German boyfriend in the past and I have no problem with the accent! I actually find it cute when you try and speak English! :)
Mhh.. everyone here (the younger generations, the older ones learned russian) should be able to speak it.. Germans are quit open to the language but some are afraid of really speaking (not writing) it, so..
But I have really no idea of how it sounds for someone with English as a mother language.
Sure why not. My wife doesn't have a German accent even though her grandparents were from Germany.
No way. I know a guy from Germany and I think that their accents are awesome!
Bad? No, I don't think so. They are distinctively german though. Can't be mistaken for anywhere else.
I find some to be kind of cute, depends on the tone of their voice and how thick it is.
The other way around, if it is too thick then I wouldn't be able to understand.
I'm sorry but I just really feel like German accents are rough, ugly, and angry.
ROFLMFAO , the way you speak doesn't determine how your personality is. Just because someone doesn't have a rough accent doesn't mean they're a sissy and just because someone does have a rough accent doesn't mean they automatically know how to fight.
I feel like a lot of people in the states sound rough and angry "sup yo" "sup baby" "fo' real"...on and on...yuck, yuck, and yuck.
HappyHrt101, I think it's funny how you and "ROFLMFAO" ASSume that I'm even from the states! LOL that's ignorant and dumb on your part :) The American accents you're so ignorantly referring to are people who use slang and speak in ebonics. You act like I'M supposed to personally be offended when really, you just made yourself look like an ass :) and 'sweet 18'...Iguess you were trying to be funny...no. lol let it go.
lol she can dish it out but she can not take it. funny. listen einstein, it is a fact that the way you speak determines how your personality is. soft voice/feminine language (french/british English for example) = weak personality. deep voice/masculine language (russian/german) = strong personality. don't try to deny the facts.
lmao, there's nothing to take! You act like you're so awesome and amazing at "making me dish something" but all you do is talk sh*t lol! Just because I don't like German accents doesn't mean I'm trying to dish sh*t out so get over the fact that it's my opinion and keep it moving! also, no that is not a fact! I know a man who drives buses for a living and has the sweetest tone, but he used to be a boxer! Just because you say it's a fact does not mean it's a fact.
I'm all for free speech, but I just have to say it. Your opinion is wrong. What you're saying is a huge generalization and what you think a German accent is like is probably Arnold Schwarzenegger, who's Austrian. Some accents can sound pretty stereotypical, which I believe is mainly southern accents, but others can sound quite beautiful. My mother's from Germany, and she's lived here in Canada for a long time, so she doesn't have much of an accent anymore, but she speaks German while speaking to family on the phone. She definitely doesn't have a rough, stereotypical accent. She's from speaks High German, and she's from Niedersachsen, and I find her form of German very beautiful.
No, but you do have accents compared to native English speakers.
It can be quite a harsh accent but its not bad I kind of like it.
Women who speak English with a German accent sound sexy. I'd pick it over the French, Italian or Spanish accent.
Nothing wrong with it. Have you ever seen Flula on YouTube? He's so funny!
I have a german friend and his accent is not bad...
he sounds good
Some do , others' don't
I think you shouldn't care about accents , in the end it just shows you where you are from , that it isn't you native tongue and that you are not perfect bi-langual , a lot of people have accents , and just think , an English speaking person doesn't often do a good job at speaking german either is it now ? ;-)
Oh, there are you saying something.. ^^'
In german it is really hard to avoid an accent because of the.. uhm.. lineally form of the language.
Even germans have accents in german depending on the special area they came from. Shouls be the same in English.. Like saxon English or something ^^'
you have different accents in every language I think , English , german dutch , french , swahili , whatever :D
Sprechen Sie deutsch?
:(
Ich w?nsche Ihnen sprach Deutsch.
I know! So does French. -.-
es ist offensichtlich. :D
I think they sound weird awesome
I don't think it sounds terrible, I like it O.o
I love german accents get in my bed :p
I think it sounds awesome and angry.
Hell ****ing no.
