What Do YOU Know? You're Only 15.

I get that question a lot. What do you know you're only 15? More than you might think. I'm not here to shove any agenda down your throat because frankly, I don't really care enough. What I do care about is to discuss something that happens to me. I realize that I experience what is known as ageism. For those who don't know here is the definition.

You're 15 years old. Go do some homework. Go clean your room. Isn't it past your beadtime?

I am not elderly but I do experience it. Often my ideas or thoughts. get dismissed or overlooked. The same question I asked earlier could apply to a lot of other people. What do you know at 18? What do you know at 20? What do you know at 30? What have you really accomplished? I doubt it's that massive especially for the early twenty-year-olds that usually come after me. I doubt you have a house or a stable job? Are you in college, especially with a lot of debt? Is that something you're SO proud of?

Don't get me wrong. Nothing is wrong with debt. Just don't act like you're better than me for having "more education" when you can't even afford it? I'm not blaming you just a point. I can't do too much based on my age. A lot of things are age restricted such as living alone. However, I do have means of income. I have high ambitions and I know I'll be extremely far by 20 and I plan to have my life together by 25 and then retire early and live a nice life.

I don't think anything of that is out of the question. You have to remain focused and you have to find other ways to reach your goals if your own job isn't cutting it. People are so quick to just complain rather than getting off their butt and finding more opportunities. I need to go back to the topic at hand but I sometimes like to ramble.

The point of this was to just ask the question of what have you accomplished that you can tell me that I don't know a lot? What really does it matter though? I don't get how people can tell me that what I'm saying has no meaning. I speak of myself and my life how are you going to just discredit everything I'm saying because I'm 15? Being 15 doesn't stop me from dealing with things. Being 15 doesn't stop people from doing things. Nothing has happened to me but I know others haven't been so lucky.

I don't get how I can't think about my future and whatnot because I'm 15 and I don't know about life. Well, I guess I must not be living then. Whoops, I wasn't aware. For example in this post (Before I talk about it I will say my previous posts aren't the best written. However I am working on it. The more I write the better it is.) The Reason I'm Not Attractive In this mytake I talked about why I didn't think I was really attractive. I got a lot of comments telling me men have it worse, ugh. Here we go again with that I already made a response to that. I got a lot of comments about me being 15 and not needing to worry about it. That's not going to be an excuse when I'm 30 with nothing going for me.

Men Obviously Know Better - In this mytake, I discussed what I previously talked about and was again told I didn't know what I was talking about.

BLAME THE WOMAN - Another example. I was told I don't deal with any issues. That man has it so hard in society and women only receive benefits. That I know nothing. However, those things affect me whether you want to believe it or not. I'm in school so dress codes are a thing. They are forced on girls more than boys for the dumbest things.

I will admit I'm not the smartest. Neither are you. We all can learn more. You might know more than me on certain topics but the one thing we know everything about is our lives and ourselves. That's the only thing I talk about. I cannot tell you about your life because I don't live it. Feel free to leave relevant meaningful comments. I hope this post doesn't have as many idiotic comments as all my other posts.

I'm not much older than you, but I still know the reason why we are overlooked due to our age: we have almost no life experience that is worth a s**t to almost anyone else that isn't within your age group.
AT 15, You don't have a mortgage, you can't vote, you can't drink (legally), you can't have sex (legally), you can't fight for our country, you have never worked serious full time job, you are statistically more easily led, you have never been married, you've probably never been pregnant and raised children, and your parents and teachers are still making a good deal of the decisions for you.
Your life experience to this point, means nothing to a single adult alive.

No, you're not speaking the truth. You're speaking everyone else's truth. It's not yours/ You want to be well-liked. My age doesn't mean I haven't experienced anything. You cannot discredit what I'm saying because of it. If that's the case then I can discredit you because you're only 19 what do you know? You haven't finished college if you are even enrolled. Probably are not living in your own home. Your point discredits everything you just wrote.

Ageism is perfectly valid in many situations. It's just common sense.

I also remember being a teenager. And my views on the world and life make me grimace in light of what I know now. by the way, I have zero debt and a stable job that pays alright.

Likewise, many older people view today's issues heavily through the lens of how things were 30, 40, 50 years ago, which can make their stances irrelevant or counterproductive.

Ageism is not perfectly valid. I know some things that people older than me know.
For example: When I was around 8 years old I already knew how to wrap a Medical Bandage. I was with my Grandma (She's a Nurse) and we where at a game and one of the players got hurt and she was dealing with another person so she told me to wrap the medical bandage around the players ankle and She was surprised I did it correctly.
I know about Medical related things that most people my age don't know about.
I already know about the heart and lungs, the brain and basic first aid.
Currently I'm learning about Bones in the human body.
I know how to check a pulse rate.
Most people my age don't know About or how to do these things.
So Ageism is not Valid. My knowledge is with medical related things. Others my age their knowledge might be History or Something and they might know things in that category that an Adult would know and not many people younger know about.

People shrug most teenagers off at 15 because you lack experience. Period. You're like the doctor who just got out of med school trying to school the veteran on what life is like as a doctor when the vet's been in the business for 20 years. You can think you know so much, but what you know is the tip of the iceberg.

I mean, you list the example of some college kid in debt trying to talk to you about money. You say you have a means to make income, and that's cool and all, but at 15 unless you're living on your own and having to deal with everything else on your own like all the bills, trying to get your own health care, paying taxes, trying to make ends meet, even though they may be in debt, they can still talk to you about the struggle and try to prevent you from going down that path--- something you really don't know about at 15 because you're not going through it yet still living at home. That's fact.

I'm pretty sure lots of people said they would never end up where they did in life, but you also cannot predict what life will throw at you enough to say the plans you list for your life here are concrete and nothing can alter them. Life has a nasty way of throwing you off course even with the best laid plans. Every single person hopes they'll do well, and succeed. You are allowed that endless optimism at 15 because you haven't really had an opportunity yet to screw things up or have your life screwed up by much living on your own.

It's simply a process for all of us, and at 15, you're still young in the game and lacking life experience, something that can only be acquired the more you go along and are put in situations and have to manage your life on your own. Also know, absolutely know that, a lot of what was crazy important and critical at 15, won't be the later you go on in life. Again, something you can't know now, because you're in present mode and don't have more experiences to look back on and say, you know what, why the hell did I care about x so freaking much. This happens to literally everyone, so it's not putting you down, it's us trying to pass our "aging" wisdom you're way, and someday, you'll get here too. Everyone says never me, but everyone does.

Secondly older people having much more experience then you in virtually everything is just life and common sense they're more experienced, seasoned and have done and seen a lot more then you have and have something you lack world experience.

Thirdly this what your going through is nothing special, everyone and I mean everyone went through the phase of thinking they knew better then everyone else around them.

In a few years your going to change and think differently then you do now as you grow older accumulate wisdom, experience and see more of the world. And when you get to be our age and older you'll start having similar thoughts that we do when we see someone your age claim to know better. Would you really say you have the experience to lecture me on life?

You posses no right to lecture me on life just like I have no right to lecture someone much older and more experienced then me on life.

That's not to say people your age don't sometimes have good ideas or valid points because I will admit some do have good insight but mainly older people know better.

Ageism was already a thing and has been. Wow, another pompous 20 years old who thinks they know everything shocking! No one cares about fishing or weapons. Where do you live? What's your house like? Life plan? Salary? Do you own a business? How much income do you generate on your side businesses? You need to have ways to make money and to survive. Fishing is not going to make you be able to afford a car worth over $100,000 or to be able to buy your own home. It may make you happy but how happy will you be living in a shabby apartment for the rest of your life.

I never claimed to know everything. The POINT since you obviously couldn't see it with all the wisdom you apparently have is that you cannot say my life experiences are invalid because of my age. Thank you for your time and please continue to spread your so-called wisdom elsewhere.

I live in a town I'm not going to tell you what my house is like or my salary that's private info, I do own a business yes.

I plenty of ways to make money, a job, a college degree/certification that allows me to work in 90 countries and in every state legally both at a already established business as well as privately.

Sweetheart you don't need a 100,000 car and no one in their right financial mind is going to spend that kind of money on a brand new car unless it's a status thing, only thing you need is a good solid truck.

Also a shabby apartment is like mansion to me I grew up in the crime filled ghetto in a former drug house. A little apartment suits me just fine.

I see your point but the fact is that 15 year olds often like to think they know it all (or a lot) when they don't. Their mind doesn't even work the same way as it does as an adult, the brain is still in transition. And things that mattered to you as a 15 year old don't matter shit when you are an adult.

I, and many of my friends thought we knew it all when we were 15. Time has passed and now that I'm past 20 I just feel like I know less and less about life than I thought. What I said when I was 16? "When I'm 18 I'm going to move into an apartment with my best friend, I'm going to get a job as an English tutor. Blah blah", where am I now? Still living with my parents, not seeing getting my own place any time soon in YEARS. I don't even have a job. Life is FAR from simple. Sure you can have dreams but having realistic dreams as a 15 year old is rare because your experience out in the adult world isn't much, the older you get the more complicated you realise the world really is.

But that doesn't mean that you're stupid or that your opinions and ideas don't matter, you just think differently because of your transitioning brain in puberty and your lack of experience in the world. I'm sorry but it's true. I too still lack experience in many many things, I can finally admit it now without being defensive, this is just reality.

I never said I knew a lot of everything. This was a response to a post I wrote where many would discredit everything based on my age. My age doesn't stop me from experiencing things. Everyone's life is different. You may live with your parents but I can guarantee you that I won't. It's not me not understanding life rather than me understanding my own and taking advantages of resources around me. I don't love my current situation so my goal is to get out of it. I have realistic goals I'm going to live on my own by 19 but I'll be in college so I won't be with my parents regardless. My goals aren't to live in a mansion or a huge apartment in Manhatten either. You can feel how you want to feel I lack in physical experience not mental experience because of the sole reason that I cannot do everything a normal person can like drive. However, I will soon and I have money saved up for one of my dream cars and I get my actual realistic dream car around 20.

The only thing I'll say is the same thing I say to my students, who happen to be your age.

You will look back at yourself in 5 years and realize how immature you really were at 15. And then after another 5 years, you'll realize how immature your were at 20.

Life is a learning process. These people who you perceive act better than you (which I'm willing to bet that they aren't acting this way) are actually going based on their own personal life experience. I've already been 15. You haven't been 27 yet. I have an extra 12 years of experience. So while your opinions and views aren't irrelevant, they simply just don't have enough weight behind them to match up with my years of experience.

And I as a 27 year old don't really have the right to lecture a 39 year old on life, either, because they have more experience than me. It's human nature to not take advice or value ones opinion when that advice or those opinions have no merit.

Ageism is appropriate at times. Unfortunately, that's just a hard truth for you. I'm sure when you're my age and you have a 15 year old talking about what 'they know' at 15, you'll be rolling your eyes, too, because the truth is that you don't know as much as you think you do. Sorry.

In this day and age, far less credit is given, and far less credit SHOULD be given to youth. In the 13th century, girls were mature enough to get married and raise a family by the age of 12, and boys were mature enough to get married and provide for a wife and kids by the age of 14. Nowadays, a 10 year old is barely expected to clean their room consistently, much less raise a family in 2-4 years. We've stopped training kids to be adults and have begun raising them to be teenagers. We don't expect people of college age or younger to have any firm grasp of the world or to have enough experience to make judgement calls. And most of the time they don't. As a society we've stopped training our children to be as mature as possible as early as possible. Certainly in any circumstance, the older you are, the more maturity, experience, and wisdom you've developed. A fifteen year old hasn't had nearly as much life experience as a 24 year old in most cases, and in quite frankly, opinions don't really matter in the real world. If you don't have life experience to back something up, your opinions are virtually worthless. It's a sad fact of life but it's the world we live in. Your best option is usually to get as much life experience as you can, and go from there. People may always look down on your opinion for being younger, but that has no effect on whether you're right or wrong about something. The chances of them knowing better than you are usually pretty good, but it's not a guarantee. If nothing else don't assume you know better than someone older than you, unless their information on a subject is simply outdated.

Put simply, be willing to learn from those around you, especially if they are older and have more life experience than you. But don't simply ignore those who are younger based on their age, be willing to take what they say into account. The simple mind and reasoning of a child may often be a source of great wisdom... or great foolishness.

Well if we're going with your opinion, then that doesn't matter. I have older people commenting who have more life experience. Why should I listen to you? Since that's the game you want to play. The point was you can not say my experiences and my life is invalid because I'm younger. Age doesn't mean anything but a number. Sure there's laws but people break them all the time. Life experience doesn't count for anything. It's not going to get you job. It's not going to buy you a car or a house. If life experience matter then they would not be people who were millionaires under the age of 20. What life experience would they really have. Yet they are successful and that's all that matters life experience is not going to make you happy in life.

Did you know that most people in the top 10 percent or so of wage brackets are those in their fifties? (I believe that's the correct time frame). The point being the people who have the most fit bodies, along with life experience do genuinely get paid more than younger people. In other words, life experience WILL get you a job. But not just life experience, it must be work experience. There's this thing called human capitol. It refers to the value an employee has to their employer. A person's human capitol increases based on the amount of job experience that person has. Work experience makes a person more valuable and means they are likely to be paid more by an employer... in other words, life experience can get you a job, and it can buy you house or car assuming you're wise in the way you manage your money.

I'm not saying life experience is the only thing that matters. Like you said, if that were the case there wouldn't be millionaires younger than 20. But it does mean a person has had more time to learn about how the world works. It means a person has probably been around more people and has learned what makes them tick. It means that they have learned more than the average person younger than them.

Life experience means a lot. It's age that means very little. In and of itself age means nothing. Being older simply implies more life experience. Of course no two people live life the exact same way, meaning that a 90 year old couple who have lived in the same house their whole lives probably have less life experience than a 30 year old couple who have travelled the world seeing new things. You wouldn't base your decision to travel over seas on the advice of people who have never been there. You'd base it on the advice of people who know what they're talking about.

Of course your life and experiences are valid. You simply have less of it than someone much older than you. Life experience is like a form of currency that you build up over the course of your life. I likely don't have near as much built up as someone 10 years older than me. Even so, our decisions and choices build up life experiences meaning that there's a small chance I have more life experience than a person 20 years older than me. It's largely about how much you are willing to learn from life, and those around you. And keep in mind, life experience helps you to gain wisdom, and wisdom helps you to gain wealth. Obviously it's not the only thing that can help one gain wealth, or again, like you said, there wouldn't be millionaires younger than 20. On the other hand, I wouldn't go to any of them to ask for life advice. They've made their wealth through means other than life experience and that's great. But without life experience to back them up, their opinions are worthless to me.

As much as if admit I had less experience in life, I also now that it doesn't mean I'm fully ignorant about everything and I'm still aware about what's going wrong in our environment. I starred writing blogs since I was 14 (now I can't because I have studies) and many people would backfire me for the same reason: I'm young and I'm a GIRL (people here are sexist).

Funniest thing that happened was: When I wrote one blog explaining while it isn't the fault of the girl's clothes if she is sexually harassed, many people commented back saying that it IS the fault of girls because girls have enticing bodies and all.

I wrote that blog in the month of January. Thar year THREE GIRLS WERE SEXUALLY HARASSED AND MURDERED. Out of them one was raped, one was stalked and all three were brutally injured, one of them beat all the odds and survived despite the injuries. One of the cases happened in an area secured by army, one happened in park and the third one in front of a school campus.

All three girls were modest, two of them even wore the headscarf called hijab. So all the cases did nothing but prove my blog, I reposted it saying that I wrote this in the beginning of the year and see how my words matched? They couldn't agree more.

I do admit like yourself that I don't have as much life experience. However I do know about my life and the experiences I go through. There exists some logical clarifications to explain here. It seems you have some reasonable ideas that merely could use some development and clarification
-The statement that age and knowledge do not always correlate positively (as one increases, the other does) is essentially perfectly reasonable.
-Intelligence (or the extent to which someone is smart) is generally used to mean one's ability to process information in a way that is reasonable and efficient (productive to producing knowledge given other knowledge)
-Knowledge is generally used to mean accurate information, and as a result, does not mean the same thing as intelligence (one can have a great deal of knowledge and have an 85 IQ and one can have relatively little knowledge and have an 160 IQ) (it's a very common misconception to confuse the two, knowledge and intelligence)
-As you explained/implied to some extent, one can be young (say, under 20) and have a great deal of knowledge and be highly intelligent (or one of the two, and of course sometimes neither)
-It seems to be a fairly common misconception to think "person A is 15 years old, therefore person A has relatively little knowledge". One way to refute (as in prove to be unreasonable) this is to point out that even if most 15 year olds have relatively little knowledge, that does not explain the relative amount of knowledge any given 15 year old has (or more simply; just because most 15 year olds don't know a lot, that dosent mean that each specific 15 year old doesent know a lot)
-The same distinction (/explanation) can be made about age and intelligence

And I don't intend for my comments to be formatted like formal papers, I intend for them to make logical sense. Whether you want to call that "correct or not" in terms of formatting is besides any of the relevant logical content and is therefore not of my concern, the comment was typed purely out of compassion.

I don't think you fully understand what ageism actually is. Thinking a teenager probably doesn't have as much of an understanding of the world as an adult does isn't ageism, it's common sense. I'm 18, and I fully acknowledge that there is still a lot I don't know. When I was 15, I knew even less. We're pretty much all idiots at 15. The frontal lobe of your brain doesn't even finish developing until you're 18 to 21. What you know about life is a fraction of what you'll know in a few years and that is a fraction of what you'll know when your in your 20's. I'm not saying you don't know anything, but you probably don't know half as much as you think you do.

Just because you knew less and still don't know anything doesn't mean everyone else doesn't. There are 18-year-olds who have millions or at least are almost there. There's 18-year-olds with booming business and are actually doing something. It's so funny how people try to generalize just based on how they were.

while i won't dismiss anyone outright based on age alone, we older folks do have this little thing called life experience... and that's not 'ageism'; that's just common sense.

i have a friend who's 19 and very smart; her experiences are different from mine, so we can learn from each other. but, because i have more of it, there's a lot that i know about the world that she doesn't because she hasn't experienced it yet. and, if she can benefit from that experience in some way, i'm more than happy to share.

Well if you cringe that's sad. I never claimed to have a lot of age experience. That doesn't really mean anything regardless. There are 20-year-olds that have less life experience than you but they're millionaires. Life experience doesn't get you a job or a car. It just means you've lived. Yes, some people will use it as an excuse to discount something valid you say, and like you, I was very well spoken, knowledgeable 15 year old and could speak with authority on several topics. I took on a lot of adult responsibilities. I tried never to let my chronological age limit what I could do.

That said, even the people who valued my opinions the most could sometimes hear me do or say things in a way that showed the certain cockiness of youth, unearned assuredness, or maybe partially unearned assuredness, and they took me down a peg or two, but they weren't wrong. It was a way to teach humility.

So, I hear you. I just don't think it's always wrong. But certainly, people who respect you and are trying to mentor you work to preserve your dignity.

Is it right or wrong to judge because of age? Well! It depends!

Example: you're 15 and you ask "Who should pay for 1st date?" then i guess its ok. you're young but chances are you may have a few date experience.

Example 2: you're 15 and you ask "Where are all the good men?" then boom. you'll be flamed. 15 y old and you call us "men" and implying you already had experience with "bad" men and you can't find the right "man".

Examples are examples so dont take it personally. Anyways, problems will be solved if you mention something like "from what i see around me".

I get what you're saying, Everyone's entitled to talk about what they want. Wether people want to listen to your answer to a question is different. However, you point was that someone cannot tell me that my points about my life are invalid because of my age. You don't know me or my life. Who are you to tell me? When I was 15 I thought I knew everything. Then when you get older you realize how little you actually knew and how naive and foolish you actually were. This same thing happens to almost everyone, which is why so many women talk about the "stupid things they did when they were young" and wish they had of been smarter.

I totally get how you're feeling. I just go anonymous, and let it say I'm under 18. I'm more likely to get MHO that way, and people won't be as likely to comment on my age. I may not have that much life-experience, but I'm really good at putting my experiences into another perspectives, and I help people by doing that.

At 15 I already knew a lot of things and the basic truths of life were even more understandable than now, I had so much more time to discover myself and the world around me and now I've beginning to lose it all. As I work in a clothes store, I have not much time to deal with my hobbies. If I have a day off, I spend it sleeping.
