Why is my crush so protective of me if he has no feelings for me?

We've only been talking for like 2 and a half months and he always feels the need to defend me or protect me, for an example we work together and had to take the trash out and we had to pass a homeless person that is clearly on drugs cuz he talks crazy to himself but anyways he kept looking back at me and I said "what?" And he said "I'm just making sure he doesn't do anything, gotta protect u" and then smiled 😐 why would he say that knowing I like him?
