Why does it mean when a guy invites you as a plus one to a wedding?

One guy I had a crush and lost contact in February invited me as a plus one to a weeding. We met at a house party then we met another time for drinks. We were supposed to meet few times but it was a bad timing. He had a severe illness, had to take meds for 2 months, couldn't exercise, drink etc. I was mostly initiating the contact via text. When I had birthday he called me to wish me happy birthday. What I heard from mutual friends we was not really talkative with his friends. But my friend (she's in relationship with his friend) was talking with him from time to time, and he said that probably he has no chance with me. I though ok he's not talking to me, he lives far away, it makes no sense and I deleted his number. Later this week first he wrote to and then called me. He sounded a bit stressed. I commented that he has a good timing haha but he didn't get it, he just said that he asked 2 days after he received the invitation.
He was really persistent though I said I couldn't go, finally I agreed if he could arrange a transport the same day. Plus it's been a while I been at a wedding.
