+1 yI actually did have bears sniffing around outside my tent once. We were in the upper Yosemite valley with the plans to get up early and get up half dome in the morning. Middle of the night I hear something in the campground walking around, something big. Fortunately it didn’t bother anyone, but it did bat around the chains for the bear box for a few minutes before moving along.
Had a friend from high school tell a story about being bit by a coyote as a child. They were camping out under the starts and the thing bit her head and she went back to sleep, woke up covered in blood and her parents took her to the hospital.10 Reply

+1 yProbably a bear.. Coyotes always travel in packs. Either way, the odds of survival when encountering either one face to face are slim. But I feel like maybe I would have a bigger chance at facing one bear versus several coyotes.

Wolves travel in packs.
Coyotes are solitary. - +1 y
@coffeewithcream wrong. I live in an area that has many coyotes and have seen first hand that they do in fact travel in groups.

No problem.
Coyotes are solitary hunters. Coyotes would not sniff around a tent in packs.
Coyotes live in small packs but unlike wolves rarely hunt in packs. Coyotes hunt alone most often, can hunt in pairs, but that's seldom.
I appreciate you live in an area that has coyotes, so do I.
Depending where in North America you live, coyote behaviour, though it will not vary much, the size of different coyote species may determine different hunting behaviours, but the above still applies.
If a coyote is sniffing at your tent, it's rarely going to be with another coyote. - +1 y
Sorry, I've lived in coyote country all my life.
Wolves hunt like that. We see coyotes here every second or third day.

+1 yCoyotes for sure. Way easier to be killed by a bear than coyotes. Coyotes killing a human is extremely rare to my knowledge. Or at very least the attack-to-fatality ratio is way more favorable against a coyote. A bear can take your head clean off your shoulders, it’s a lot tougher to die from what are basically just dog bites.

COYOTES PLEASE
I could fucking drop kick a coyote, those things are scared of humans, and rightfully so. We're bigger and stronger, they're scavengers, not hunters.
Bears will eat you because you're there. Or just kill you because you're in its territory.
You see all these scientists in the comments saying you'd be fucked either way. I think they think coyotes are somewhat close to the size of wolves? They're like 30 pounds or less, they don't fuck with humans.10 Reply
+1 yI'd rather have a coyote sniffing around.
Bears grunt and stuff and it would be way creepier. Plus I think they're harder to fend off.10 Reply- 6.4K opinions shared on Other topic.
+1 yI've experienced situations with both bears and coyotes, and Id rather hear a coyote near my tent. Bears are very strong and can do a lot more damage.

00 ReplyI don't mind till they are outside my tent and not trying to enter in my tent.

+1 yDefinitely coyotes, they don’t really bother with large prey like humans. While bears usually are big pussies too, I’m still less concerned about coyotes

Well, I guess it depends on the bear...00 Reply- 717 opinions shared on Other topic.
+1 yWell both are not much as a threat so either
The only bears in my area are black bears and they are very harmless and shy04 Reply- +1 y
You are more likely to get killed by a Brown Bear than a Black Bear. The most easy bear to deal with is the Spectacled Bear who are very vegan. Also, coyotes are not that huge
