What Words Do You Think People Overuse Or Use Incorrectly That Are The Most Annoying?

I have two that I think are overused the most out at least incorrectly:

1) Triggered-It's funny that the people that throw this word around the most are the "triggered" ones... The ones that start calling you names, being overly offensive and if you reply or defend yourself, you're "triggered"..
These are also usually the ones that gotta have the last word and then block you...Good Riddance 🤣🤣

2) Butthurt- Same reason, any time you disagree or defend yourself or your position, you obviously are butthurt 🙄 like really people 🙄 get over yourselves 🙄 the only way I could get 'butthurt" wouldn't be by anyone on here and would require lube 🤣🤣

I agree with triggered and butthurt. Both words are used to write someone off without actually saying anything. Just say they are triggered or butthurt, and therefore whatever they say is stupid and meaningless.

Literal - This is both misused and over used. The big problem with the misuse of literal is the word itself. The same word is used both for literal and not literal. It's like using the same word for yes and no.

Categories. People hate stereotypes so much. But people today overuse the heck out of categories. They need to put something in a category before they can decide if it's OK or not. They can't use sentences and paragraphs to describe something.

An example of this is someone who asks "Is this cultural appropriation?" If it is, then it's wrong somehow. If it's not, then it's OK. Just ask if it's OK, not which label or category applies.

There are a whole bunch of categories and labels that are way over used. The sexuality words have gone way over the top. Language can't be reduced to a single word. That's what sentences are for.

This reminds of a "fad" back in the 90s. We had Buzzword Bingo. I don't know how many people actually did it, but the idea was funny. The game is mainly for company meetings, but also applies to marketing, corporate propaganda, etc. You use a regular Bingo card with various buzzwords. If the word is used, you mark it on your card. Then yell Bingo when you complete the card. I never saw it, but I would have loved to hear someone actually call Bingo at a big meeting. That would have been hilarious.

Buzzword Bingo was a bunch of MBA bullshit type of words. Like "Think outside the box", "Risk Management", and the worst of all "Paradigm". Some of the MBA types thought that the more buzzwords they used, the more important it was. When in reality nobody could figure out what the hell they were talking about.

It became such a joke that there are several Buzzword Bingo web sites that have variations of the game. Some of them are pretty funny.

Triggered is a good one for sure... I don't hear butthurt too often but your points are well made.

In work conversations, I hear way too often "At the end of the day..." - how about let's end this conversation :)

Work or personal context when someone says "Give 110%"... um... that's not possible :)

Now for a more serious thought... the word "hate"... like "love", saying you "hate" something or someone etc should really be reserved for things worthy of hate (which... isn't much...) - dislike is usually better... overusing hate (or love for that matter) weakens what should be a very strong word and emotion.

Young people want to feel that they are a part of their peer group and they do so by listening to the media tell them how young people should think, talk, and act. Then they do what they are "supposed" to do. Sometimes I call them sleep and sometimes I call them Kool-Aid drinkers.

I do want to emphasize that not all young people follow this formula. Some of them are quite independent. It's about the same as what my generation was like at that age.

I read the comments, and I agree with "literally" and would put that one at the top of the list. I also agree with the ones you mentioned: "triggered" and "butthurt". It's like they run out of arguments, and throw that in as a last attempt to look like they won. I see and use "simp" a lot, but I wouldn't say that one is wrongly used, because there truly are a lot of simps in this day and age, so I feel very tempted to use it. "Cringe" is an overused and stupid word to me, and also "creepy": Every time a guy tries to flirt with a woman in a way that's not totally commonplace and boring, he's called "creepy". Of course there are also some weirdos out there, but not everybody that tries to flirt is a weirdo! "Logical": A lot of very illogical statements are labeled logical by the one who makes them, as if to add more importance to them. When I say something's "logical", I truly speak from logic. Otherwise, if I just want to say it sounds reasonable, I will say it sounds reasonable. It annoys me when others misuse that word. "Open-minded": When did this word become a synonym of leftist, pot addict, "geeky" (I'll come back to this one next) waste of space of a human being? Open-minded means you keep your mind open, not that they brainwashed you in school and now you repeat like an idiot, while thinking you're a part of the latest revolution. "Geeky": Gotta love this one. It used to have a meaning. Nowadays it means you're into pop culture. Synonym with "nerdy", when a "nerd" also used to be something more special. "420-friendly": You're not "friendly", you're just high, you piece of shit. Often the ones who put this thing in their description are among the most arrogant, rude sons of bitches that you can ever come across. Makes me want to puke, really. Sorry I ranted for so long, but I took this opportunity to vent about the people on the Internet

Your descriptions of the way "triggered" and "butt hurt" are used were perfect. Made me laugh. I so agree. People who do that don't understand the irony. They accuse you of those things because THEY feel triggered or butt hurt.

There were some other really good examples of words in the replies here so I won't repeat them.

There is one word (phrase) that really cracks me up these days. People say, "I believe in THE science". THE science? What it implies is, they have internalized an emotional attachment - a "belief" - in a narrative that is purported to be based on science but is actually paid for by big, big money. "THE science" referred to in mainstream media ignores, censors and slanders science that conflicts with the official narrative. "THE science" is actually anti-science because real science is about performing unbiased research and studies, looking at ALL the research, questioning, vigorous analysis and debate. It's laughable when the propagandists (profiteers) talk about a scientific consensus.

When a person utters the term "the science" they are parroting a phrase that has been repeated in the media in recent months. It's a reveal. They are attempting a superior stance by implying that "I believe in (the) science and you don't." In reality, there is a ton of extremely credible science that that person is not even aware of.

Calling someone an idiot or a moron. While you can disagree with someone politically or with their side, to insult their intelligence and use words that imply lower intelligence or IQ is lazy in my opinion. Just because they have a different take on a topic doesn’t mean they are literally stupid and can’t pass the 2nd grade. Both Biden and Trump are clearly intelligent however you will see countless examples of people trying to insult that intelligence.

Other words that are overused are curse words such as fuck and shit. Again I feel this is lazy as people substitute the word fuck for too many adjectives and adverbs. Let’s use our grammar and be more specific than just calling someone a fucking idiot. It’s been used so often it loses most of its sting. I’ll use fuck for the literal meaning of having intercourse or when I’m joking around but too many people say fuck every 20 words much like the smurfs use the word ‘smurf’ to substitute for all their Smurfing expressions.

Adulting... As if you even need a term to describe how an adult should act, rather than just doing what you're supposed to do anyway.
