Have you ever successfully done something based on a "how to..." you once saw?

I just kind of wing it, usually. Well, what I do usually is I forget the "how tos" anyway so if my house is on fire, I just kind of wing it at first and that usually doesn't work so I rush to the computer and do a Google search on what to do if our house is on fire.
@exitseven Nope!
A fireman once told me during fire safety talks in companies one of the most common answers to "what would you do if you found a fire?" Is "I'd fill out a form"
Wrong! The correct answer is oxygen.
I'm sure there are lots of things I've seen done but didn't do right away. Then, when the need arises, I have mental images and information to recall. That's kinda how life works.
One particular thing came to mind. In my early 20s, I watched a video (before internet) on how to shoot clay birds with a shotgun. The instructor had a camera mounted that looked right down the top of the barrel of his shotgun, so that it was exactly what you would see when shooting. He was at a trap range. When he said "Pull" and the clay bird was launched, you could see how he tracked it, caught up with it, passed it up to lead it just the right distance based on the speed and angle, fired while still swinging the gun, and followed through.
I had to practice, but at least I knew what I was supposed to do. Before long, I was breaking between 23 and 25 out of 25 consistently. (There are 25 shells in a box and you fire 25 shots in a round of trap)
I've been actively doing the How not to die one for my years, it is working so far

I actually learned to paint by watching Bob Ross
Other stuff I've learned successfully includes:
Building a fire with a magnesium flint
Growing a good crop of root veg
Growing a good crop of savoury fruit (marrows, peppers, tomatoes, squash, etc)
I've been watching Shawn James on YouTube (my self reliance channel) so I can learn self sufficient living, but I've been slowed down by losing my leg so I don't know if I've learned enough to build a log cabin yet.
Great question and yes one time comes to mind - when I got caught in a nasty rip current. Thankfully I grew up near the ocean and was told a few times what to do but never needed to use it when I was a kid. Much later in my late 30's, was on a beach with some big surf. I was body surfing. Having fun getting tossed around and then a rip current hit and it was strong.
Somehow I instantly remembered what to do which is let it suck you out - don't fight it or else you'll get tired quickly - and when it stops, you then swim parallel to the shoreline - then starting heading towards shore. That is what I did and the rip current took me out over 100 yards. It was pretty wild and certainly there was no time for YouTube research :)
Yes but sometimes you better read the pamphlet twice my friend went out to check out the bear pamphlet he messed it misunderstood something because it didn't quite end up that way it ended up the bear was on top of him and the bear wasn't pulling his underwear up saying. say uncle say uncle. Pulling up even further saying who's your daddy
There have been several times when something went wrong with my computer and I was able to go on YouTube and watch a video that showed me how to fix the problem.
I learned how to cry.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/uBDAPJpwILwI use You Tube videos a lot. Simple stuff like how to replace a mirror on my Chevy Tahoe to how to sweat a pipe and replace shingles on my house.
I've done it so many times.
I learned how to sponge paint.
Put up a PVC deck.
Put up a pool.
Train a dog.
How to change brake pads on my vehicle.
They worked...🙄
Hey, I'm still alive!
I want to see a guy do this 😄
Is that a tutorial on how to rape bears?😂
Yeah
right
