In my lifetime I have raced motorcycles on dirt tracks, in the deserts, and on road courses. I have raced everything from high-performance go-Karts to NASCAR modifieds, dirt modifieds, and land speed vehicles. I have been in the Coast Guard as a search and rescue swimmer, primarily on the Eastern Seaboard, but also in Vietnam. I've been a volunteer firefighter for 25 years, and a Los Angeles Police officer as a trainer for high-speed pursuit I've worked with my dad as a carpenter building homes, for several years I was Vice President of an automotive firm that imported and sold foreign auto parts. I have been a parts manager for dealerships, a service manager for dealerships. I was in Porgie and Bess opera, sang in the choir at the Syracuse Dome for a national religious ceremony. I sing solos, duets, trios, and 4 man barbershop. I sign occasionally with an Elvis impersonator locally. Each year I put our 400 flags, flowers, and markers for my Lifesaving and Coast Guard veterans in cemeteries from Oswego, NY to Association Island.
That's most of my history. But I live a simple life in a retirement community. Because of my arthritis, I am unable to do much physical activity, other than the occasional singing gig or the twice a year putting out flags etc and picking up.
Those things are impressive; but it sounds like a resume, not an introspection as the question is intended. You're a very performance-based person, eh?
Yes, always have been. Even today. As for the resume', I suppose you're right but it does give you some perspective into why I consider myself as complex.
The "simple life" sounds merely like circumstance, at this age. I don't know if "complex" is exactly the right word here though. I still think these fall into some other category. But I can't think of a word to sum it up and I shouldn't try. It's your life, and you know yourself best. It does feel like you were either born, or bred, to be a certain way. It's what drives you.
I was born to a lower-middle-class mother and father. Dad drove a milk truck to go to farms and pick up the farmer's milk. Mom worked for an insurance company and eventually bought the company from her employer when he retired. My grandfather was a hero back in 1901 when he and his crew saved some people on Lake Ontario in the middle of a winter storm. My work ethic came from both of my parents, and my desire to help others came from my admiration of my grandfather and my Christian values I learned as I was growing up.

I do simple things for complex reasons. Or vice versa.
Simple in some ways, complex in others, and maybe a mess in a couple areas.

Why? Does that seem straightforward to you?
It's taken me years to work out what makes me tick. Not surprising the other humans are confused.

Everyone has a complicated side.
Men are easier to figure out because we are driven by ego, sex and food.
I have strange ideas but live life plainly.
Actually, I believe I am a bit of both. I can be a bit of a 'blackbox' depending on who is asking.
We are all the same level of complex as we are all having the same human experience of the universe. More simple people would be people who think less
