Easy one. Most of the time criminals do not operate alone. There are MANY MANY reasons for the need for an AR-15. Here are two scenarios

S1: You're at home alone asleep and someone breaks into your house. You hear multiple voices and the sound of a gun being racked. The invaders notice your presence and do not plan to leave witnesses and you are in a position where escape is not possible. In that scenario, a handgun is not enough to repel multiple armed attackers. The adrenaline rushing through your body will make your hands shake slightly, no matter how well trained you are (I know this for a fact as a military veteran who has deployed). Also, keep in mind that in many cases one shot is not enough to stop someone, which is the reason police and military are trained to shoot until the threat is stopped. Also, there are various objects that could hinder your shot and the crooks are not just going to stand still and get shot. The average 9mm handgun magazines hold 9-15 rounds. In a home invasion, it takes an average of 6-8 shots to effectively hit and eliminate the threat ONE person poses. In most gun fights you do not have enough time to reload another magazine unless you have someone watching your back, which is not often the case in a home invasion. Hence the need for the larger magazine an AR-15 offers.

S2: Outside the home. Hunters do use AR-15s to defend themselves from wild animals in the event they get cornered. Also, the government loves to step on the rights of their citizens for the sake of their political agendas. Look at Cuba, China, Russia or almost any other nation in history. The ONLY reason the USA exists as its own independent nation is because we were suppressed by a tyrannical government, but instead of letting them coax us into submission, we fought back. Now look at what the Democratic party is trying to implement today and you start to see the need for powerful weapons should they take any more power and try to step on our freedoms our ancestors ALL (including blacks) fought for.

No civilian needs a gun like that, and I don't give a damn what the stupid Second Amendment says about this. The Second Amendment was written during a time when it took ages to load a single-shot, clunky musket that was accurate to just a few metres, and when having a "well-armed militia" made perfect sense, because there was the very real possibility of a European power (particularly England) squashing the new republic.

Most gun-owners claim to be 'Christian'. Well, do what the Bible says then, and disarm. Embrace pacifism.

They are highly customizable, not designed to shoot people and not assault weapons, AR does not stand for Assault Rifle. They are modular which is why they are so popular. Some look like your picture but others look nothing like that.

I don’t know why anyone would NEED to have such a weapon. But most of what people aren’t things they NEED. They are things people WANT.

That said, you asked “why anyone would NEED such a weapon. So here we go.

An AR-15 is a very effective weapon for self defence. It’s also not they only type of gun that people use.
You could argue that it’s “over kill”. I guess it’s simply the weapon they chose to buy.

I think the odds of using a weapon for self defence are pretty slim, so it may be reasonable to have other uses for the weapon. Those uses could be things like hunting, or for sport.
I’m sure it’s a fun rifle at the shooting range.

You might say that a simple hand gun would be enough for self defence, and I would tend to agree. But I think hand guns are harder to get.

Anyway…. There are examples of these weapons being used in self defence, and to save lives. We only hear of the bad stories because that’s what makes the news.

In reality some men from states such as mine feel the need to own ARs, shotguns, etc. For home defense, and while something like a G17 would be sufficient to turn a human into past tense, these men either want to ensure whatever person dumb enough to break into their house is leaving in a body bag, or are compensating for something.

Or they just like that gun go bang like I do. I've fired guns ranging from vintage revolvers to an SKS and can definitely say it's a satisfying experience.

Well for one instead of focusing on the lives lost by guns maybe look into the lives that they save.

Also there are several reasons

1# Recreational Purposes
I don't know if you've ever gone to a range before and shot but it's a lot of fun and a great stress reliever.

2# Hunting
Mechanically there is no difference between an AR-15 and a semi-automatic hunting rifle. They function exactly the same and the rounds you can fire in a AR-15 you can also use for hunting.

3# Self Defense
I've read and seen a lot of stories about people defending themselves with AR-15s. There was one kid in Texas I think who was home alone and his house got broken into by like 3 armed people and he was a shooter and had an AR-15 and was able to defend himself and drive off the attackers.

The fact that AR-15s often have adjustable stocks or come in smaller sizes actually make them more efficient in home defense then a full sized rifle.

While I'm against civilians owning guns personally, the reasoning is pretty solid.
Who does need these guns? The military. If the military ever attacks us, what do we need to stand against them? The same or better.
If you look at countries where it became a shitshow, like de coup in Turkey ~6 years ago, what the hell are normal people supposed to do, with kitchen knives.. vs AR15s?
That's why a lot of people don't want to give them up, they don't want to surrender their only chance of being able to seize control under weird circumstances.

99% (and probably more) of those who own guns like that don't shoot people with it, let alone in a non-defensive manner. There's exponentially more death from handguns. It's actually really weird, anti-2a people seem to be more obsessed with how many people can kill in a single instance rather than exponentially more people dying overall to another type of weapon. It's like they'd rather save the 40 people (random number) killed by automatic rifles than save the hundreds or thousands killed by pistols. And if people really wanted to kill a lot of people, they're going to. And whether it's made to kill a human isn't relevant. to me as having held and dealt with those guns first hand those are easier to hold then a regular rifle due to it being smaller in size with the barrel being 18-22 inches in size. rifles with barrels exceeding 24"+ or more is a bigger pain in the ass to hold and shoot then the ar's and ak's
