This story doens't give any details about what actually happened so right now I can't judge on who's to blame. As of now, I'm inclined to blame the parents for letting it get to that point because they probably weren't watching their child

Well in the name of justice the Dog does have the right to a lawyer and a trial. The act was done but the means is still yet to be justified. Tough to say if this is a species related crime or neglect on the part of the owners based on previous attacks or acts of aggression from the dog. Somethings you just can't tell what a dog will do. Same thing could be said if the roles were reversed and the baby killed the dog without know what they have done. There is a good chase the dog might receive the lethal injection. Its not the first time im hearing that sentence after a dog has attacked a human

Even under "perfect" circumstances, the dog must be vetted out fully, be a breed that accepts people well, and at least tolerates other dogs. Many dogs- including ours until a few days ago- are OK with kids about 6+, but aren't aware of their strength over- and perception by- a toddler. The parents were the ones who didn't allow enough time for basic training and familiarization with each family member. The parents were the ones who didn't allow training before being introduced into the family. The parents don't deserve any creature as selfless and unconditionally loving as a dog.
