Is guilt that powerful, what makes some people confess?

It can be confessing about anything from cheating on an exam, admitting to having an affair all the way to committing a crime.

If they could've gotten away with it and there was no way of them ever being discovered, what makes some people actually confess? Is just guilt alone that powerful?

Beats me. Confessing to humans is a waste of time. There are some things you should just take to the grave and deal with the fact that you did it. Confessing it doesn't absolve you of anything and often changes your life for the worse. Of course, I'm not talking about serious criminal acts here.

It's about keeping a lie. And every time you lie you have to keep track of that lie. Eventually it can feel like a heavy burden and confessing releases it.

Yes it's terrible living with a lie for so long that you start having nightmares about it. You can't sleep well and it continues haunting you like crazy to the point you can't stand it anymore and want to get that off your chest for once and for all.
