Women, would you get offended if someone greeted you with “hey guys” ?

So I’m a server and I always greet my tables with “Hey guys” “what’s up guys” “what can I get started for you guys” etc.

Because to me, “guys” is a gender neutral term.
I’ve heard other servers say they stopped saying guys cause they have had women get offended by it. Then it happened to me 😳 An older woman at my table said “I was doing fine until you called me a guy”

Im still gonna say guys tho cause what else do I say? 💀 My coworker calls his tables “folks” but I think that sounds stupid lol

Y’all I’m not worried about sounding too casual. I find that I get a better reaction from guests when I speak more casually rather than sounding like a customer service robot. I even had a couple leave me a good tip and said they were gonna ask for me again bc they like how I talked to them like that.
It’s definitely an age thing tho. Millennials and gen Z definitely like it but I try to sound more professional with older people.

I find people see what they want to see. I had an older woman accuse me of trying to seduce a doctor because I wore professional clothes when he showed up to give a lecture and I usually dress in casual clothes. Her claim was outrageously unfounded and she would not even consider that she made an error when she made the accusation. I don't bother to get along with unreasonable people. For every unreasonable person who hates you there are a thousand reasonable people that will understand your views.

I see TV shows where the server approaches the patrons by saying "Hey guys, what can I get for ya"? There were only women at the table.

Actually I think it's way too casual to say. It's also very inmature sounding.

At my age, yes, I would get very offended if some young punk said what you say. The customers aren't your friends and you shouldn't be talking to them like they are.

Lol I’ve had so many tables say they appreciate how I am and that I don’t sound like a customer service robot. My tables love me and I get great tips. I work at Olive Garden. Not a fancy restaurant lol

Really disappointing that that happened to you. And, right, "folks" sounds a bit weird, particularly if you're not in the south. I suppose, if you find yourself forced to change, you could use "hey everybody" or just a plain "good [morning, afternoon, evening] with nothing after it.

I grew up with the word “guys” being gender neutral too. You aren’t wrong.

This must be a generational thing. If people want to get offended over something said in respect, and known it was said in respect, ignore them. They are probably the same people who troll the net looking to poke people. They will find something negative in everything as it’s what they look for.

Just laugh their rudeness off politely. Or tell them to tone it down or you might spit in their food. 😉😁

"Technically" the word guys means men, but now that word has just become a neutral word that people just say to a group of people. Sounds like the woman was just being petty and looking for a problem.

Folks does sound better. I understand that "guys" is used as plural but it does sound stupid. Some guys use it all the time even when there isn't a guy around. That's just plain rude and annoying. I remember this really handsome guy said "take care ladies". To me that sounds more respectful or you could say "folks" if you feel uncomfortable saying "ladies". Some guys think they might give off romantic interest feelings.

It's a bit casual, but I wouldn't get offended by the wording. "Hey Guys", folks, everyone, y'all, ladies and gents... Any of those would do. Just a hello, good afternoon, or good evening is sufficient.

No. As I have my friends who are boys who call me "dude" aaaand it works. As I'm usually misgendered but something like "sup, dude" i won't think about it too much. We still friends so it's all good

I think some people have started saying "y'all" for this reason, but the answer is no, it would not offend me, I use "guys" that way for male and female both.
