Are you dependent on having a car?

Question

Cars are a big topic for me lately, as I plan to buy one this year or at least the next year.
Basically, I'm not dependent on a car, here everything is close together and I can get everywhere on foot, by train or bus.
Only when getting groceries it's really annoying to have to carry everything myself, especially water... ughhh
Also for my family it would be easier if I had a car to share and if I could drive my mom to work and my sister to her freetime activities and well it's nice driving around haha

(Fun fact for the guys who claim all women want only a guy with a porsche... here not having a car isn't a deal breaker for most people lol)

I LOVE your “fun fact” I totally agree. I don’t “need” any guy I date to drive anything at all, let alone a Porsche! In fact, I’d rather date a guy with the common sense to NOT buy a massively depreciating thing like a car! All that tells me is if I DO marry the guy, he’s more likely to spend MY money on stupid toys!
But yes, I am absolutely dependent upon my Jeep. Although I live in a college town, and get around on my bike most often. In the states, (except for a few cities like New York, Chicago, etc… there is not much in the way of reliable public mass transit, also things tend to be much more spread out here, “zoning” dictates if an area is residential or commercial, and with very few exceptions (here in Florida) they dont mix the two. It could be miles to the nearest grocery store. Also it’s not uncommon to work in a major city and live 45, or more miles away, to take advantage of the cheaper suburban real estate. Also, my family lives about 90 minutes away by car, so I most definitely am completely dependent upon my Jeep.

Nope, i dont even like driving. there's not really anywhere i need to go in my city except for the grocery store every 2 weeks. I might go to the movies every other month. But no matter if i go to the movies or shopping, i always have someone I can go with, i just pay the gas. I prefer out of town trips because i just fly to the city and then the city is either walkable or has uber or has trams/monorails (similar to subways). When i work, its often out of state so i do virtual stuff unless its the occasional office meeting. I’m a car lover but i hate driving

I sure am. I live in a small town of 2500 people. There's no public transportation. I have to have a vehicle to get to and from work. We have a local grocery store with a small selection so if I want to go to a bigger grocery store I have to drive there. I have to drive just about everywhere to get anything done

I lost my car due to hitting an object on the highway that assassinated my transmission.

I didn’t have a car for three weeks. It sucked. Especially because during this time I couldn’t go to the gym and also cause it was raining like fucken crazy

For sure but only cuz of my kids depending on me to take them places. When they were smaller I shared a car with my husband since I didn't have to go out as often but now I'm out everyday

I depend on a vehicle if I can't get my cousin to drive me then I need to go by Medical Assistance (Medicaid HMO) to take me by their vans to my medical and mental health appointments. They also take people for grocery shopping with a reduced fair that clients can afford.

No, not at all. The company I work for has the perk that I can work from home without needing to go to an external office.
I don't move around a lot and whenever I meet up with friends, we meet up close to my place since I live near the city center. At most, I walk for around 25 minutes or so.
So I am not really dependent on having a car.

no, I could ride my bike nearly everywhere I need to go. and I'd rather do that on good days.

Long trips... why not have an amazon drone pick me up in a "pod" and deliver me to where I need to go. The Jetsons!

nope, in fact... I have not had a car since the pandemia currently living at a very good centric location so pretty much everything is near enough and the rest is taken care of by Uber

Since it's so cold now and it's hot and muggy in the summer, a car is a necessity for me. Although if we're just talking about distance, I don't need one. I work maybe a mile or so from where I live. It's not too far to walk, but I'm not wanting to do that in 14F weather or with >90F >90 humidity.

No. There is good bus connection to clinic where I work but a car increases comfort immensely.

Comes really in handy at work - when we've to transport the kids around, I can just throw my hands in the air and tell the others to solve the issue, I can't help. No driving mini busses for me!

Unfortunately, public transit where I live is abysmal at best, and its too cold to bike half of the year. Add to that having to drop off and pick up a kid every day... I couldn't function without a car.

Yes. Hour drive each way to work, 10 min to the grocery store (over hills), and at least that far to get anywhere else. I don’t want to imagine the time it would take to walk these distances, and I used to rely on public transport for the nearby college…public transport was not all that reliable here
