Why do you think people think cats aren't affectionate?

I never understood this, I boiled it down to people just not raising cats right. I've always had affectionate cats, my cat right now would fall asleep in my arms if I didn't get tired of carrying him around everywhere.

My glasses end up with smears all over them from him smooching my face.

People think cats aren't affectionate because they're often seen as being more independent than dogs. Cats don't need to be walked or taken outside to go to the bathroom, and they can be left alone for longer periods of time without getting anxious. This can lead people to believe that cats don't need or want as much attention as dogs.

But that's not true! Cats are just as affectionate as dogs, they just show their affection in different ways. Dogs are more likely to wag their tails, lick their owners, and jump up and down when they're happy. Cats, on the other hand, are more likely to rub against their owners, purr, and knead with their paws. These behaviors can be subtler than a dog's, so people might not recognize them as signs of affection.

If you're patient and understanding, you can build a strong bond with a cat that will be full of love and affection. Just remember that every cat is an individual, and some cats may take longer to warm up to new people than others. But once they do, they'll be your best friend for life!

I grew up with dogs and have 2 cats (I love both) and I do agree with others that people compare the two far too much.

They're entirely different animals that show affection in different ways. Cats are definitely very affectionate but express personal boundaries a lot more "loudly" than dogs do. And there's generally more miscommunication with cats. I've seen people who've only really been around dogs approach cats in the same way ( towering over them and going in to scrub there faces) getting a slap from the cat and then dismissing them forever. When all it would have taken would've been to reach out for a little nose boop and invitation to pet from the kitty and the slap/scratch would've been avoided.

My two cats are like velcro to me , they're always headbutting, purring , making biscuits on me, following me around the house and generally loving on me. I agree, raising them wrong can play a huge part as well. Learning the basic body language of an animal is incredibly important to their well-being in my opinion.

having fostered around 27 kittens in the last fours years... I would agree that yes, people do need to make an effort and raise their pets well

even the little feisty ones can "learn and adjust" and will end up getting along with others, if you take care of them well

see them as individuals and focus on their personalities so, if you're willing to get along with them, they will respond to that... lol

the two kittens that happened to be the most "challenging" ones are two kittens I kept at my place, and nowadays they're all loving and get along just fine with everyone, and not just with me

usually its just bad experiences usually when growing up.

i wasn't fond of big dogs growing up but it was due to a couple of moments i had with them.

No im ok with them but there's still a tad bit of apprehension when im around big dogs lol. they can be excited and jump all over you as you know. but i don't dislike them anymore.

I had a friend in high school who got a kitten and they just keep it in a large dog crate all day and when we all went around there me and another friend who liked cats git him out to play with him and everyone else freaked out because he was biting and using his claws (as kittens do) it made me so sad. The cat ended up running away.

Well, I don't have a very good experience with cats because it was a stray cat who killed my pet bunnies to death, they would also kill the babies of my rabbits. It was late night and the bunnies were inside their small cottage with metallic net located in our garden. This troop of cats decides to open that metallic net and drag out my bunnies (for eating them maybe) and they killed them in the process. Heck, a cat even killed a pigeon whom I tamed, that pigeon would come near my window every day but he didn't came one day. My dad found his half eaten carcass on the verandah.

But anyways just because of few cats I don't have the rights to judge all other cats based on this. I'm just a bit cranky about them but I still love them as much as dogs.

@serious yes but then they were stray cats. A tamed one is just as adorable as a tamed pup but stray cats are wicked compared to stray dogs, at least few of them.

@serious my cousin is a big cat person, he tamed almost all the stray cats around his area before he shifted. They were all cooperative and adorable and they were smart too.

I had a female calico kitty for 13 years. She was very smart. So smart sometimes she was almost like a human. She was a rag doll in my arms like your cat. She trusted me 100%.
After she died, I got two new kittens. From day one, neither of them wanted anything to do with people. They didn't like being touched at all. I always thought their behavior was weird. I got them separately at different times from my local pet shop. Can you think of what might have happened to make them that way?

Yes, cats are very affectionate. Mine is always in the window waiting for me when I get home.

Then when I am home, he's like my shadow - follows me everywhere. When I go to sleep, I fall asleep on my side and my cat will perch on my hip.

I think a lot of people compare cats to dogs. I find both very affectionate, but, cats tend to be affectionate when they want, dogs tend to be affectionate all the time.

It comes down to dogs being needy and cat's being a little more independent.

Not saying it is a bad thing, it is just something I've noticed over the years having both.

They are affectionate. They can read your emotions and actions. Big dogs can do it too. They are ones that are usually the big babies... lol

They certainly can read your emotions. My cat would lay on my stomach and distribute his weight in a way that was essentially pressure therapy when I was in pain. He wouldn't do it any other time, usually just lays up so his face is closer to mine.

Because many treat cats like dogs and expecting it to work, that's one. Two! Many cat owners refuses that kind of affection, mostly understanding how the cat operates/communicates.

I've never heard anyone legitimately say that they stink cats aren't affectionate, or that they're less affectionate than other pets. Are you sure you haven't just looked at too many cat memes?
