Imagine that only once, for about fifteen minutes, you would be able to talk with your dog or cat. It will understand what you say, and it will be able to talk and you will understand.

If you could have a one-time-only 15 minute conversation with your cat or dog, what would you talk about?

This is my cat, Uncle Thunder. I would tell or ask him the following things:

1. What is your favorite food to eat?

2. When I make you come inside at night to sleep, do you understand that I am trying to protect you?

3. When Helen and I move in the next year, we will be taking you with us. We want to continue taking care of you and enjoying having you in our lives. But if you would rather stay in your old neighborhood, we will let you do that. We need for you to tell us what you want.

4. Would you like for us to find a companion for you, another cat to share your world?

5. When I put that liquid on you that you don't like, it is what makes the fleas and ticks go away.

What would you tell or ask your pet?

I would make sure the three of them understand how much it means to me and also how much it helps... every time that they sensed I was not feeling my best and they would not let me by myself, and could even spend hours cuddling me

while I do try my best not to bring these feelings and emotions to them, sometimes it's just too much so they can tell... and then they don't want to leave my side, just like my Luna dog would do it every single time during my childhood and early teens

she could always sense and know if I were going through a spell, so we would either play all the time like absolute maniacs or she would just lie down by my side and never leave me, and as much as I needed that and loved her for it, I always felt bad to bring them down like that but... that's friends

now my cats are like that too... especially Luna cat, the mom... she's always keeping tabs on me when I don't feel my best, and she thinks that cuddling and smushing herself against my face does help, and well, it does... yes, it helps a lot, lol

I would ask them how they feel about the temperature, humidity, and precipitation. I would also tell them about the forecast for the next week and how it might affect our daily routine.

My cat has shuffled off this mortal coil at this point, but if he were still alive today, I think I’d spend a lot of it trying to establish communication codes for the future, like “if you’re hungry, do this”, “if you want to be pet, do that”, “if you feel sick and need help, do this thing.” He would meow at me all the time and I’d just be like “what do you even want?”

I do feel like we established an eye contact based communication in his last years. Like I could look at him, then look at the empty spot on the couch back to me, back to him, back to the spot, and he’d take the cue and jump up and sit down.

Or I think I figured out an “I love you” signal that we were able to reciprocate, where I’d super slowly blink/narrow my eyes at him, and he’d do it back, and begin purring, and start rubbing his muzzle off my nose. So that was pretty cool, and I think I’d try to establish that again with a future pet.

But yeah…. I’d set some communication codes with a pet, get some feedback from them about their wants and needs, and then spend any extra time expressing sweet nothings😂

My dog Coby is dead now.

But if she came back and I was able to have a conversation with her, I'd ask her if she was happy and what would make her happier.

I would also ask If she forgave me. . . . . .

During her last night alive, she let out two whimpering barks. Barks that I knew were a desperate cry for help. . . . . .

I fell asleep because I had a test, but I wanted to go downstairs and be with her.

I rationalized by choice with the next day she'd be free because we were going to put her down.

It was too late.

She was gone by morning.

To this day I still wonder if she hates me for that.

I'd ask if there's anything more I could do to make their lives happier, make them understand that I keep them inside for their own safety not to punish them, apologise for all the times I accidentally knocked them off the bed in my sleep 😁

I would first apologise to my dog for the times i haven't be a good petowner and became angry quick to her. I would ask her to understand why I did it, what's going on and what she does that annoys me (pulling the leash, barking early in the morning around 6AM because she's bored, eating poop from the street and jumping deep in bushes to take a dump). I would also tell her what happend to my sister. And also ask her if she understands us before she was able to speak. But also thank her for all her love, playfullness and as a lovely animal helping me through depression.

When I got Harry from the shelter I was told that they found him in the supermarket parking lot across the street from the shelter. He was pretty freaked out when we brought him home. He would hide under the furniture and only came out to eat. He would not let us pet him. It took months before he started to feel comfortable in our home.

I would ask him what went on in that supermarket parking lot to make him so afraid.

What can I do to make her life better? Thank my dog for all the times she sat with me when I was in a bad mood or wasn't feeling well. Ask her what is her favorite and least favorite thing to do with me. Ask her if she genuinely likes the dog park or hanging out with other dogs in the neighborhood. Ask her what she stares at sometimes in the windows for so long. Ask her if she hates the few handful of people she actually barks at when they visit and why.
