How sentimental are you, if at all?

Over 50 years ago a lost a great girlfriend whom I loved very much. I had always treated her with respect and affection, as well as humor. She had said she loved me. During our breakup, she told me, "I want to be put in my place." I asked, "Should i have done that?" She said, "Yes, it might have helped." I said, "Should I do it now?" She answered, "I don't know." I should have been angry. But back then I didn't know how to be angry at someone I loved. I thought that was the kiss of death! And what I got in the end was the kiss of death!

I thought, "What's my takeaway from this? "Never be too nice to a girl because she won't appreciate it, she'll just think you're a wimp and she'll disrespect you!" In the years since I've learned a lot about human nature. People with poor self-esteem feel that if they're not worth much, then anyone who could love them can't be worth anything, either! There's a lot behind this story, but the question sort of rang my chimes here.

Oddly I name my trucks, but not my bikes. Though I am attached to them all equally.

Had attachment to random stuff until I became really ill and realized you take it with you. That new mindset cleared out the house, so much so that I regret a couple things.

I think we become sentimental with things that mean something to us, touch us on a personal level. When that sentimentality is attached to a solid object it's a concrete way of holding onto the past. Memory will eventually fail most of us if we're lucky enough to live that long. Objects then become triggers to otherwise forgetfulness.

This at least was my excuse for a long time.

I am a very sentimental person. I still keep old tickets, napkins from dates or even the Starbucks sticker.

More than I want to admit. Here are something's I have that I don't ever want to part with:

1. A pair of kids sunglasses (it belonged to my elder brother who passed away when I was in kindergarten)

2. A couple of perfume bottles from where I was born (I'll buy new perfume but never used them up completely)

3. A handwritten note from my 12th standard class teacher (she explained Normal and Molar values for Chemistry exams)

4. 6 notes of 200 denomination (it's half of the prize money I had won in my college with my then girlfriend. Those notes have more sentimental value than monetary value to me)

5. A handkerchief (belonged to the same girl from above. I guess that's the last token of the friendship we shared)

6. I have more than 6000 screenshots just to save the memories

I have a lot more to list, but these are some of the very dearest ones.

I keep gifted items for YEARS!
Especially birthday cards. It started when I was 16 and you know how friends give you a sweet 16 card and such, well that.
I’ve got each year from my friends since 16 until now.

Sentimental things lead to suffering. It is better to detach yourself for most things and only minimally emotionally invest in certain things. A. k. a, as much as you need to to feel happy without compromising your rationality or intellect.
