Spend 4 seasons in Montana and you’ll see it’s more than just snow and bad weather.
When it snows, it snows…. And weather can be really bad. I have a friend who is a Montana state trooper. I visit whenever I can. He loves it, his wife… not so much. - 1 mo
Beach areas are nice. Too crowded for my taste. I do like the water though….. living on a sailboat is something I’ve thought about doing.

My retirement plan was to keep moving with the sailboat. I’m on the east coast so sail down around Florida stopping and staying any place I want along the way. Sail through the gulf area stopping along the way anyplace they have good seafood. I want go through the Panama Canal. Then sail up the west coast states. Stopping alone the way anywhere I want and staying as long as I like. Most likely I’m be hanging out in the Southern California waters for a good while.

Do you know how to sail? I've been sailing since I was about five years old, and I've done a lot of long-distance sailing of the type you're talking about doing. It's not easy. It's not comfortable, and it takes quite a bit of skill and knowledge to actually do what you're suggesting. Do you think you would be able to do this?

Oh yeah, you also cannot sail up the west coast, actually. I mean, you can, but you shouldn't even try it. The prevailing currents and wind are against you, blowing from north to south. Trying to get up the coast is almost impossible on a sailboat. If nothing else, while not impossible, it's absolutely miserable. I know I've tried a little bit, so it's not worth doing.

@msc545 you got me beat… I’ve been sailing since I was 7ish. Never long distance. The biggest was a 28’ and used to stay out weekends with it, but I would want a 32’-36’ if I do this. It’s been a dream that when I retire to sell my home and buy a new one. I never researched sail up the west coast…. Didn’t think about the winds… although I am in zero hurry. This right now is just talk. No plans yet but the way work has been lately I’m thinking more and more about retiring.

He is right about the boat being incredibly high maintenance. I've been there and done that. You either have to do it yourself or you have to pay somebody to do it. If you have to pay somebody to do it it costs a small fortune. You have to do it yourself. It kind of takes all the fun out of it. I used to mix it up and help out my friends with airboats and they'd help me with mine. The only time that you really get into trouble is when you're out in the middle of the ocean. Something serious goes around and you got to fix it yourself if you can. There's nothing quite like a bilge pump failure in the middle of a storm to make you believe in God.

Probably california by the coast. Been there a few times but its not a place for anyone who doesn't have $100 million in the bank. Met so many homeless up there, guys in 50-70 talking about how they worked all their life to buy a nice home only to have sold from under them by the city because they couldn't afford the property taxes because some wealthy people wanted the land to build condos. Legal robbery.

What's not to love about it? The people I encountered there were really nice and the weather is phenomenal. If I could afford it, I would move there in a heartbeat.

Ok I guess I will just keep on dreaming about it instead. It's not like I would ever be able to afford to live there anyhow unless I hit the lotto big time. But I will take note of your warning in case I ever do get the opportunity to move there.
- 1 mo
You could definitely afford to live in certain areas of Los Angeles if you could tolerate the slum-like conditions and homelessness that abounds here. If you're ever tempted to move here, I suggest taking a 2 to 4 week vacation here and seeing what it's really like. I should solve the temptation to move here fairly quickly.

It got worse but the city agency that was tasked with coping with homelessness failed miserably and hired an outside agency that basically stole millions of dollars and did nothing to help the homeless. There was a federal lawsuit and I think a consent degree and it's turned into a huge mess. There are sections of the city where I used to go that I will no longer go into because the homelessness problem was managed so poorly.

Man, that sucks. They should have owned their political responsibility and known better than to bring in some shady "consultants". Remember, consultant = to con + to insult.
