Personally, I think it's rude unless it's an occasion that involves asking, such as needing documents or celebrating a birthday. people make snap judgments based on someone's age. I don't know about you, but I don't need someone assuming a bunch of things about me based solely on the year I was born and how many years l've been alive When someone asks how old you are, they're more often than not trying to gather up some bunch of assumptions about you, many of which are faulty and lead to false opinions. For instance, if someone tells you l'm 40 years old, are you going to have a different attitude towards what I have to say than if I told you I was 17? People judge people on what they say and do, not how old they
I've never considered it rude when someone's asked my age, no. I suppose it could be, depending on the context, but I've never had anyone ask me in a way that suggests they're using that information in any sort of negative age.
Most of the time, it's simply asked out of curiosity, because they assume I'm younger than I am, until I make a comment, or act in a manner which suggests I am older than they thought, and they ask out of clarification.
Based on that context, I'd rather that they ask my age, instead of being misinformed based on an assumption, but I've never found either the question, or the assumption, to be problematic.

I think for a majority of men we don’t think it’s rude. I think too men are more accepting of the fact that we get old. Women not so much. Not only that I think if you ask women, they tend to think am I looking older than I am because really most women are concerned about getting older as opposed to looking younger. A lot of women are judged in their looks, so age plays a role in that. But too I think it’s also because women have been conditioned to say that. They hear their moms, aunts, other women say it so they just run w it.
I really don't care. I mean it's a weird question to ask someone you just met or barely know. But it could come up in a group conversation. Oh, my birthday is next week. How old are you? Then it goes around the table with everyone stating how old they are.
If I would be interested in dating you being a man, the question is very important to ask to make sure you dont accidentally date a minor. Sometimes its really hard to tell if someone is older or younger then they appear

From most people it is rude. It is rare when it is anyone's business.
This right here is the point!!

I can certainly understand why you could see it as rude, maybe at one time I’ve done the same but these days I guess I’m just a bit more liberal
Mostly agree that it depends on why they are asking. I am not particularly off put by someone asking my age.
I don't mind especially when I watch the expressions on their faces after I tell them how old I am.
''A scoundrel who thinks evil of it''
However - in many cases the question is pointless.
That's what I'm saying. It's a pointless question. Like what is the significance of knowing?
It depends. If they're just curious, it's not rude.
If a job interviewer asks, it's not only rude, it's illegal
Generally no but it depends of course a bit on the scenario.
If you meet a guy who wants to know you better then it’s rude if he asks you how old you are
Why do you think a man that wants to Date you is rude for asking age?
@Smileygirl2000 I might be too old for him
If you were 40 I might assume you have children but thats all
It does not bother me personally. I'm 21 and use to getting carded to buy beer. But for some I think it would depend on the scenario.
Imagine a guy is interested in having sex with you. Don't you think he should confirm that you are at least 18 years old?
it is rude especially if you are asking a woman.
At a store they may ask age and id when buying something. It is what it is.
That's an occasion that REQUIRES knowing your age. That's not rude
Whats rude about that people are getting way to sensitive. Now a days you better ask you can't tell Young people from old people
Whats the point of asking someone their age outside of dating them, their birthday especially in the workplace or barely know you?
Some one just might be curious there is nothing wrong with that
You know a gentleman NEVER asks a lady's age, weight or bra size !!!
Unless she asks how much money you make... then you hit her the three deadly sins.
@InknKink Thanks.
I personally don't take offense to that.
These days I've gone passed caring.
No but I probably will when I’m forty
I don't, but I always wonder what their reason is.
Men are the worst
Make sure they’re of age.
Not always, but it's often rude.
How old are you? 😁
No, I'm not an idiot
