In terms of college/universities, no they're not overrated. Schools like Harvard, Yale, Stanford are better than public schools because:
-Usually they have better profs lecturing
-Beautiful campuses most of the time
-The prestige of the school usually makes it easier for graduates to find jobs
-Networking with alumni and bright classmates
No it doesn't make someone better but it does show that they tried harder to get into a school like that. Granted, I'm talking more about highly-rated schools rather than private. Some of the smaller private universities/colleges really are a waste of money and going to a public school would be better. There are some really good public schools too though: UC Berkeley, UCLA, You Mich, etc.04 Reply
Asker+1 yBut I disagree with the quote of having better professors. I believe that private school are to expensive because of the name. I think the prestige of the school is more like trying to get a short cut I have a cousin who graduated from a private school and he can't get jobs. And the economy isn't helping . I think it's stupid for someone to pick someone based upon the name of college they went to. It's vanity.

I have no idea if they actually do have better profs, it's just my thoughts because they have the money to ask for them to lecture.
Yeah, graduating from a private school will usually give an advantage to people but it doesn't guarantee anything. It depends on the person's major, professionalism, and personality as well.
I know it does seem stupid for employers to chose someone based on their school, but that's just how it is, private-school students get the advantage most of the time.
Asker+1 yYour right. but there are always smart public school student who is always better than private.

+1 yI've spent equal amounts of time in both private and public elementary, middle, and high schools. While I'm a believer that there are amazing public schools out there, unfortunately I never had the pleasure of going to one. I live in a nice area, so it's surprising how sh*tty the public school system is. I can only imagine how horrid it is in other places. It's because of this that I spend some time at private schools. And it's true that there are private schools that aren't any better than public schools. Depends on the school I guess.

Asker+1 yI seen public schools that are good but the reason why their good is because of the area that there on. believe me or not I think that African Americans schools are the worst I'm not being racist but from experience of going to an all white and black I think that blacks school are the worst there always racial tension against the minority and when your around Asian or Latino they don't seem to be any problems.
- +1 y
No it's okay, I understand the racial aspect. Unfortunately there are some lower income areas with a high percentage of black people. And when the area is cruddy, the schools tend to be cruddy to.
Asker+1 yIt's not the color of someone skin but the environment that some lives in. I believe that certain schools do have administrators who discriminate on people I remember watching a black kid beat a white kid for no reason and the security knew who it was that did it but did nothing.
+1 yDepends on the school and person.
I loved my private school in HS, even more when I had to leave for pub school due to tuition. But then I've heard several who absolutely hated private school.
I went public for college though because my older bro went private and he feels like there's so many rules and he's " trapped" there lol03 Reply
Asker+1 yI think you can get good education anywhere then in private school.
- +1 y
yea you can. Only a few doctors graduate from top notch fancy schools or CEO's and what not - your getting the same education. Just some schools push for over - achievers as their main attraction.
Asker+1 yIt's all vanity in our society.
They are overrated because most of the people that get in are very priviledged and born into a great situation.
There are plenty of intelligent, hard working students who go to public schools and end up making a nice life for themselves. The only true benefit I see in going to private schools are advanced programs in science and technology. If you go to Yale to become a writer or an agriculture major, you're stupid.01 Reply

+1 yIn my country if you're not a private school you're pretty much going to have a bad time. Public schools here are overcrowded, teachers aren't even teachers of have teaching degrees, poor facilities and the overall quality is just sh*t. So no I don't think private schools are overrated.

Asker+1 yblame the economy.
- +1 y
Or blame the government who decided to break the whole system down and take all the money... this has nothing to do with the economy. If money was actually spent well then our public school system could prosper but in order for that there needs to be money and properly trained teachers.
+1 yMy uni tuition is $60,000
It's worth it in my opinion, because private schools are meant for me. I like the small class sizes, the connections my school has within the metroplex and the culture of it.02 Reply

nah
+1 yFor me its not about the school. Its about the student. Being in a private school is useless if you don't do your best. Its your personality towards education that counts.

Asker+1 ytotally agree.

people or students who come from private schools think they are better than anybody else but some of them are still jobless even 5 years after graduation
Asker+1 ytrue dat.
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI definitely agree. I think it does depend on the student, so many students do really well in just a normal public school and graduate with good grades, good gpa, good classes, etc if they actually put the effort into it.

Asker+1 yyeah I knew this girl who went to private school what an idiot she was and not just that stuck up as well she thinks she was better than everybody else.
lol. NO. They're usually better than Public School! I've love to go back to Private School, but my parents didn't want me to end up like Mitt Romney.

Asker+1 yHow are they better and please mitt romney is not the enemy.
- +1 y
This has nothing to do with politics. Everyone know that Mitt Romney is out of touch with the Average Man.
How are they better:
From my experience,
1). Parents tend to care about their kids' education and can usually help.
2). Kids tend to be better behaved.
3). You learn more (In Private School, I had Spanish in elementary school, meanwhile Public School had it available in High School)
4). The food's better. - +1 y
lol I think it depends on the school. One of my good friends went to St. Mary's Academy growing up - kids were selling weed behind the school, fighting, sexual harassment / acts to the ying yang. My public school wasn't nearly half as bad as that :P
Asker+1 yWho ever got sexually harassed I don't know about that wasn't there but you can't blame the schools it's the parent's fault. And I know that going to an all black school and your Latino and all black people are racists. I really don't believe that Spanish can be taught in high school when I was in elementary school they taught Spanish I don't why in your elementary they didn't teach probably budget. But I don't believe that going to private is worth the cost. It mostly depends on the person.
- +1 y
lol all black people...are racist? That's impossible, you can't be racist and a minority.
Blasphemy - +1 y
To Question Asked:
"Who ever got sexually harassed"?
Try half the 4th grade and no adult giving a sh*t until a year later because they're so wrapped up in their own BS! :D
"but you can't blame the schools it's the parent's fault"
ROFLMAO! Funny, very funny! I guess Parents are suppose to work at the school to make it a safer place. That's very funny.
"all black people are racists. "
... What? *You're talking to a African American with a Latino Boyfriend*
Asker+1 yAnd the other girl told me that private schools have better security. Yeah right.
- +1 y
yea, I honestly think parents pick private more for the religious aspect it seemed. Kids will be kids whether private or public. Just goes to show that the main idea is to develop your child as an individual capable of making good choices no matter what environment they're in. But I do agree that private school is a bit more of a " comfortable" environment than public emotionally.
Asker+1 yThat's your problem if you got harassed what I mean by it's the parents fault since you have parents who don't keep an eye on their children behavior you can't blame the building it's more of the influence in our society. And having a Latino boyfriend doesn't mean anything what I was trying to say troll was that the school that I went too many Africans were racist towards me try having a racist teacher always harassing you by the way you look and dress. I dealt with ignorant negros.
- +1 y
To Question Asker
"That's your problem if you got harassed"
And if someone got raped, it's their problem too, right?
" it's the parents fault since you have parents who don't keep an eye on their children behavior"
So in school, Teachers can't do their job? That's logical!
"I dealt with ignorant negros."
Oh lovely, I didn't use an offensive term of Hispanics, but you want to use a racial. Lovely! Clearly, I'm the racist in this situtation! ^_^ lol
Asker+1 yGo to hell I don't have time for trolls.
- +1 y
Trolling:
"The art of deliberately, cleverly, and secretly pissing people off, usually via the internet, using dialogue."
That is not what I am doing. BTW, a classmate of mine was like you. A Latina who experienced racism in elementary and middle school. Difference? She's 16 now, she got over it, and now half her friends are black. That says something when a 16 year old is doing what a 25 to 30 year old is doing.
Asker+1 yYour Latina friend got over it just like me but how come some Africans American can't get over slavery it happen 200 400 years ago. And besides I remember how Africans Americans schools are. I'm not saying all black people are bad but you take things on another level your making yourself look bad.
I remember from my experience and how I wanted to join a club but the school administrators did not let because of my skin color is that fair to discriminate on a innocent child? No sucka.
Asker+1 yGo f*** yourself At least I don't have to buy 5 dollar weave.
