So I've heard many people making rounds with this statement,

'The Past Is The Past'

Someone else's past has nothing to do with us, I agree, its none of my business when I barely know the person or rather I doubt I ever will.

What I do not get is how some people actually justify this, when someone says that its a criterion, and you'll see most of the ladies standing on their heads defending the girl in question. Consider these two polls

This question is whether the past is the past applies for promiscuous women.

This one is if the past is the past applies for promiscuous men

Now please do observe, when I said 'player'. I mean about the reputation people give a promiscuous man. Not about the man himself.

I mean let's be real, its impossible to love someone truly without knowing them sufficiently enough. I mean people,

Would you consider a relationship with people who've had the past of a cheater, an abusive person, a rapist, a felon, a violent criminal, a hooker(yes gigolos included), or even a person who has a history of lying. No the 'past' ain't the past.

You've no obligation to accept society's dogma or their criticism about you, you don't have to live upto their expectations, but guess what? People aren't obligated to accept you either.

Don't ask for acceptance, don't ask for trust. Those are earned. Every inch of it.

But the truth remains this, people who try to use 'the past is the past' card to get away from the consequences of their past actions are just ashamed of their pasts or living in denial.

Ultimately the cliche that the past catches upto you is true. Be it the sucky grades you get at school that don't get you into a good uni, your past criminal record in front of judge and jury for a crime you're innocent of, your record with your boss that eludes that job you've always wanted because of a lack of recommendation, so many many things are based on what the person was. Why would relationships be any different?

In the end, this is the conclusion I can reach. The past speaks for who you are not for what you are. A person might genuinely change from the bottom of their hearts, but that doesn't ever translate to getting a clean slate.

I think people are morons when they say "the past is the past."

These are the exact same people who would flip out if they found out their current partner was a criminal or a child molester or some crazy shit.

Sorry, but stop lying to yourself. The past is NOT the past. The past is what makes you who you are TODAY. Don't sweep that shit under the rug, take pride in the falls, trials, and tribulations that made you who you are today. If the person can't accept who you are, move on. Let compatible find compatible. Don't walk up to someone, intending to hold secrets and pretending to be something you aren't just so you can be in a relationship. That ain't doing both you or your intended mate any favors.

When a person says "my past isn't your business." That's not entirely true. If a person believes two people in a relationship should be open books to one another, they are ENTITLED to that standard. If YOU want to be in a relationship with them, then that is DAMN WELL their business. If you don't intend to be in a relationship with them, then that is now NOT their business. It's as simple as that.

I think the problem is that a lot of people say , "the past is the past" as a way to sweep things under the rug.
However , when I say it (applying to all aspects of life , not just sex) I mean it as a way of saying I don't judge people by their past. I usually like to include a quote of my own when having this discussion , "Do not judge one by their past , judge them by who they become from it". We all make bad choices in life , some of us with those that hold greater consequences than others. I don't completely disregard a past but I hold more importance in the presence. I like to ask myself , "is this person still the same?, "have they changed?" , "are they still exhibiting the same types of past behaviors?" If they are , then I simply cannot let go of who they used to be because it's who they are now , they just want to camouflage it.
