5 Benefits of Housewives/Husbands

There are various benefits to having one partner stay at home in a relationship and the other partner out working. Times have changed, the benefits compared to olden days have changed also. There is now more flexibility for stay at home parents.

1. Saving money

A housewife or a househusband can save your household a lot of money in the long run. Because they are at home during the day they have the luxury of having the time to go through the sales and compare prices and quality of various products a household typically needs. Back in the day there was not much possibility to find sales and compare price and quality of products but nowadays you can find many blogs and youtube channels dedicated to reviewing products. You name it, they review it. They review almost everything. This allows you to find the products you need for the quality you desire at the best prices.

2. Eating healthy

Because there is a partner at home they have the time to learn how to cook healthy. Generally in households where both partners work there isn't always all the time needed to cook a healthy and delicious meal. Because there is one of the partners at home, the people in your household can enjoy the best fresh home cooked meals. It also eliminates the chances of impulsively ordering take away food, which can be pricey.

3. Alternative sources of income

The days that stay at home dads or moms can't have an income are long gone! Because of the internet many job opportunities to work from home have opened up. This means that it is no longer needed to go out of the house for your job, it is very possible to work from home. This allows the other partner also to make money on the side should the working partner who doesn't work from home not make enough money.

4. Less traffic

The person at home will spend less time in traffic. This allows you to lower the cost price of car insurance because the risks are decreased. You also won't have to pay as much for gas. When the partner who goes out working gets a car from their job you will also only need one car which will allow you to save up on car insurance too as is the case in our family.

5. No need for daycare

Because there is a stay at home parent there is no need to pay for daycare which can be expensive. Its great to spend time with your children so they can have parents that have time for them. Nowadays that seems more and more to be a luxury for children with both parents working. You may save lots of money because daycare isn't needed and your time with your children is priceless.

To the people claiming these benefits aren't worth it.

My mom is a stay at home mom. She has the luxury to go through the sales and pick the items and food we need sometimes at -50%. She has the time to go shopping in France where all products are generally cheaper. We also have only one car since my dad has a car from work. Our family is able to save much money from my mom being stay at home mom. My mom also has two businesses, she works from home. She owns a stray cat shelter which works together with the city to reduce the amount of stray cats in the streets and to reduce the prevalence of diseases and cancers which are common in stray cats. She also owns an ironing business which makes some money, on top of that she's going to start a third business in the near future too.

I wish more people thought about this! All great points. Having a stay-at-home parent is so beneficial in a child's life life as they grow-- emotional support and connection, and less bitterness and rebellion.

I think the main thing here is that children need a parent to love and be there for them for most of the time. When kids are young I would like to stay with them and once they are in school I can go out and get a job. I would even really like a part time job or a job I can do at the home because i freaking would lose my mind being home all the time, but still I think it's important. People are too self-propelled that they forget it's not just their lives. If you don't have kids it's not really a need but when there are little ones, they need a constant parental figure in their lives. I don't want to miss that.

@chriss lmao you obviously don't know what being a stay at home parent is like. You can't go anywhere whenever. You've got to live tour life comoletely on a tiny unpredictable humans shedule. Plus usually the stay at home person actually pays the bills. At least as I've seen. They may not make the money but managing a household isn't like sitting at home and eating chips all day. I'd get depressed being stuck at home caring for kids with no end in sight.

Call me traditional or whatever but when I get married I'd like to be a housewife. If my husband will be busy with his business and all I'd like to take care of the house and all, when we have kids I'd like to spend time with them and being around them instead of working just for the sake of working. Of course I'll work if its NEEDED, if not then I'm staying home. Something I wouldn't mind tho is if I worked from home, that would be nice!

and by the way, each girl can do whatever she wants, if she doesn't want to work (if not needed) then good, but if she wants to work then that's good too!! 😊

YEAH... there's a big problem with your article.

If you find the PERFECT house wife/husband then the quality of life is good but realistically the person gets bored at home and isn't as efficient as they can be.

I've met a lot of house wifes and the home isn't any cleaner than other peoples. They sure as hell don't smart price check all of the stores and save money that way.
I do agree with the food thing.

The PROBLEM is there are going to be NO house husbands because that will just cause divorce. Therefore it will be women and the problem with modern women in this day is they are taught that they do not have to do anything that is a stereotype for a women yet they learn that they "shouldn't" do anything that is stereotyped for the man.

The result is women just don't do much in life at all. Refusing to work as well is just a step backward for women.

The thing with most stay- at-home parents is that many if not most aren't really respected in society, like they're just having it easy at home - sometimes their own partner might think so.
They are up to work (housework) 24 hours a day and all the members of the family take that for granted.
When the kids are grownup, the chances of them finding a job at a higher age is much smaller. Depending on where they live, it's impossible. God forbid if they actually want to try a career... also, in some countries, the taxes you end up paying for those small jobs isn't worth the effort of actually working.

Here in belgium the taxes you pay for having 2 or 3 jobs is not worth it, you are penalized through taxes for having more than one job. My mom doesn't care that society doesn't respect her being a stay at home mom. She also has the cat shelter, its a full job too.

I'm happy your mom is content and maybe she doesn't even see the cat shelter as a job - especially if she only does it because she likes it - but I'm afraid most stay-at-home parents don't feel the same way. Most find themselves without a job and feel quite lonely when the kids aren't home anymore, or worse, live far away with kids of their own and little to no contact.
Sadly, my mom feels that way with all of children having moved across the world.
Of course I also know many people who thank God for having finally gotten rid of their kids and they aren't home anymore. I guess it's also a cultural/ societal thing.

It depends on what part of society you mean. In my town everything was geared for stay-home mothers. The meetings about children's activities were scheduled in the morning when I was at work, and if you didn't volunteer for everything you were looked down on. It's like those of us who work are second class.

I really, really, really agree with everything. I hate being a working mom, spending up to 2.5 hours a day in traffic, grabbing pizza in the way home, throwing away wasted food, and spending all kinds of money I don't need to just because I have NO TIME.

Finance sites have make good arguments on how inefficient 2 working parents can be. The cost of a 2nd job is more than you realize. Some people's (2nd income) job actually costs them more than it gives! - Fine if you hate watching kids. Not great if you hate your job.

It's common for someone making $40K per year to be paying $10K in taxes and $10-20K in other work related expenses. (Do you have to buy nice clothes? Eat out for lunch? How much for daycare? How far do you drive round trip? ) And that doesn't even consider the other great points the poster made.

Calculate driving at 50 cents per mile and add up all the other costs. The result will shock you.

This is my own biased view: But I notice many people working 2 jobs have to do so because they are living beyond their means. Income hasn't increased much over the past decades - The 'need' for a Fancy home, Cell Phone, Cable TV, Dining and Entertainment has.

Your mom is a super mom! I'm all for people being a stay at home parent as long as they are entirely satisfied with that choice and are in a completely stable relationship which won't suddenly blow up and leave the stay at home parent jobless and in difficulty further down the line. Stay at home parenting is actually more challenging than any other job I've ever done!

@PunkinPie yeah but in an unmarried situation I'd have my concerns about being a permanent stay at home parent without that sort of safety barrier if all went wrong. Maybe it's more of an issue in the UK as a lot less people are cohabiting and not marrying

It's become a big issue over here with relationship break downs and stay at home mums not having an income or savings to fall back on and then having to go in to council housing which is very limited. It's tough but I'd say if you were happy to commit to being a stay at home parent then surely in the long run it would be a no brainer to marry as it's clearly a permanent set up?

I'm grateful that my company allows me ample time off and then my husband can also take equal time off as well so we both get to experience time with the baby. You can combine into 12-36 week total together with one taking time off one week and the other the next.

You have good points. Also housewives have quality time with their children. Children need their moms even teenagers.
I will say my grandmothers easily shopped the sales each week and had home businesses. This is not new to this time.
My husband has a company car, but it costs us a fortune to use, so we don't. If it works, then great.

I think daycare and kindergarten are actually good for the kids. They become more independet, learn how to behave around people they don't know, they get to play with other kids their age, and they are prepared for school.
In my country, they're only open until like 4 pm, so the children spend time with their parents even if they're working.

In my honest opinion a perfect wife in my honest opinion is a wife that you are attracted to physically, sexually and emotionally and you like her and how she is.

and she is also a good housewife who can cook, clean and take care of kids but not a full time housewife, i believe if a woman can have a part time job (maybe full job at the beggining of marriage and part time later on after having kids) she will be much happier, she will be motivated to keep herself physically appealing sense she's always meeting new people, she will feel better talking to her co workers and making new friends who are probably married as well, plus she will be motivated to go back home to her kid and husband after 4-5 hour shift and work for another 3-4 hours around the house, all in all she's basically doing a full time job half of is working, making money and feeling like she has a purpose and the other half is taking care of her family.

Here here. Having a part time job would also be nice to get out of the house, keep professional and social skills too. I don't spend a lot of money, not all women go bonkers. I'd love to be there and do those things for my kids and husband when I have them.

Speaking for myself, I have no plans of being a house husband. And I'm not going to have a wife staying at home either because:

1) I have heard and seen in action many wives wildly spending the income. Trying to rein them in and stick to a budget is considered 'financial abuse' by the courts.

2) Maybe it's just me, but the vast majority of women I have met can't cook. Some of them wear it as a badge of honor, in fact.

As much as I like this MyTake, and agree with it, unfortunately, we live in times when our daily expenses can barely be covered and still have a considerable amount of money left to save up if only one of the partners have a job... That works too but the choices for a job are very limited... Engineer, designer, programmer, graphics editor, writer... And there's not many paying jobs left that can be done on a computer, from home... And the people with the knowledge to do these jobs are also rare so it's not exactly a viable solution, but granted, if you find a partner who is able to do that, with both of you working, you are up for a comfortable, and maybe even tad bit luxurious lifestyle...

I wouldn't mind staying home IF I could run a home business as well. There is too much uncertainty, to me at least, in this world today to depend on one income unless you have to. If he, in this case, dies or becomes ill, what would you do then? A lot of 9/11 widows like that. I think at least having a second, even if smaller income, is valuable and allows children in the home to see that they don't just have to be one thing or another.

My mum doesn't work she stays at home all the time doing chores around the house maintaining 5 kids. hard work if you ask me lmao. i wouldn't let my future wife be a housewife, yes there's pros but the cons outweigh it.

There are people who want the revival of traditional family life and while I can see having one person stay at home and the other busy both, I'm all for both people in the marriage being active too at the same time I don't want kids so maybe tha makes a difference

Saving the family money by being savvy is a great thing to look for in a partner, however, my mom works a full time and some weekends, and she's still a savings queen with enough time to shop and work. So, I think it's possible to do both, ya know.

Agree with you on that one. For the exact same reasons listed, that these things are now all mainly online, many stores can simply text alert you or text coupons to your phone when posted, so there is no need to spend "hours" in "luxury" combing over coupons. Anyone can save if they really want to, and would not be enough of a reason to quit a job. Now if you're talking about savings with Childcare, that actually IS of note and may be worth it because per child, can run you like $300 plus per week.
