What the heck does this mean? He starts the conversation sometimes and we NEVER talk at school. He is sort of shy. He messaged me once just to say i was cute and to ask me if i had a boyfriend.. and he says he kinda likes me?

He doesn't talk to you at school because he's shy and messages are a easier way to communicate with you. Complimenting you and asking if you're dating are clear signs that he has a crush on you :)
You should talk at school. Try to say "hi" and bring cool topics to talk. You must feel both comfortable personally, instead of a "virtual" relationship. Be brave and start conversation at school! Good luck :)
