+1 yAbandoning family is a social behaviour common between the lower classes and poorer groups of the society regardless of race.
It is not true to say black men. if there was no responsible black men we would not have any happy successful black families. and the root of this behaviour between the black society is that before the 20th century the pressure on the African American minority and the social class they have been mostly forced to dwell in, naturally made this issue exist more between them.
whites were a majority relatively privileged with a minority group in the bottom lower class.
black people were a discriminated minority in lower classes discouraged from any improvement in their lives.
so the results was not surprising. It happened and happens almost in every poor group though history or any society when they faced discrimination in a period.
now the effects of those long years still exist in a society like America and it can't be expected to improve in a natural way in a very short period. it needs time. There is still many black families who have not improved from their places and so this is still an issue between maybe (I don't know the statistics) a major group of the minority.
The only cure is that the black society improve more. though this issue might never be 100% cured between any racial group whether white or black or etc, but the numbers can be more balanced.70 Reply

i disagree. culture, maybe slightly, but social norms have NO hold over an individual unless that person allows them to. who gives a fcxk if something is 'the norm'?
you do your own thing, and yes there are plenty of black white, red and pink people who are all exceptions to these stupid unwritten stereotypes and prove them wrong every. single. day. @TripleAce
Asker+1 yA can assure you I'm not white. Also, I can assure you that there is a much higher rate of absent black fathers than there are of any other race or culture. You come to this forum on a crusade trying to act like the savior of racial equality? Get the fuck over yourself. Quit trying to blindfold yourself to this prevalent issue. This is real life, and you need a reality check. Your ignorant response is just cringeworthy. Please keep your filth off of my thread.

me? a saviour of racial equality? mate I'm just saying what i believe, also known as my opinion, which as u know I'm entitled to. lol I'm not blindfolded to anything. I'm African by background so i know a lot more than you'd expect about this kinda thing, but whatever.
you're just another one of those people who wants their own opinion to be validated rather than conflicted, and i have no interest talking further with people like that.
Asker+1 yI asked a question. I never stated an opinion. You come here looking for conflict when there is none because you're an idiot. You can go now. You're not very interesting, or very bright for that matter.

@justbanANNAz
Culture and social norms have everything to do about it. It's not directly related to someone's skin colour being black or white. That's the indirect reason.
Culture- when your born in a country and exposed to the culture you tend to follow similar paths
Social norms - yea maybe you don't care and if may not affect you but it surely does dictates others. Another typical example is why so many young black women always get pregnant? It's sort of a social norm. Why do blacks love signing and dancing so much. Why are Asians smart at school. Because their culture dictated that discipline and education is very important
So if you ask me, culture and social norm has everything to do with how you behave
Your clearly an Aussie girl that's using the word 'mate' BUT your not even Australian lol that's culture and norms right there - +1 y

im not Aussie? dude... i love how people here think they know me. i think the fact that I'm born here makes me Australian, thank u...

Just saying.. that for the record i agree with the opinion owner, and that social norms don't really make black people leave. They don't wake up one day and decide to leave because everyone else is doing it. Races don't mean anything. Sure some stereotypes have a grain of truth, but this one is ridiculous..

Sooo growing up in the hood automatically means that you're taught to be irresponsible? Or are you saying that every black man that grew up in the hood is a deadbeat?
Stereo fucking type much? - +1 y
It means that most.. MOST of them are taught to be irresponsible by their freinds. The young and impressionable ones are irresponsible and that's what they grow up to be. Not all black men are like that.

@charismatic110
The question says "so many" it did not say all. And so In my answer I didn't mean that all black men were like that. I thought that this was already understood. So they are not totally different. I just explained my opinon more.
I hope you have a good day, bye. - +1 y
Understood, although it's not the "most" or "all" black men part that I have the issue with. It's the "grew up in the hood" part. But again, not gonna argue. You have a good one as well.
There's no statistics on the number of black men who abandon their children. The statistical numbers says that 70% of black children are living with their mother, with the dad absent from the household. However the misconception about that 70% is that there's no way to tell how many of those fathers continue to remain a active part in the child's life and visit the child on a weekly basis. Just because a father doesn't live in the same household as his child, doesn't mean he stops being a dad.
So with that in mind, abandon is the wrong wording to use in this case. Why black men are less likely to live in the same household as their child, depends more so on the relationship status between mother and father. Most African American parents are cohabiting, which makes it much easy for one of the parent to upright and leave when things go for the worst, as opposed to married couples who will try to work through the problems, since they have more to lose by splitting.51 Reply- +1 y
this. this is good. gotta love men who do their research.
571 opinions shared on Relationships topic. If you're referring to African American men who are in the bottom of the socio-economic system, it's because there are relatively fewer jobs available for these men and they have a harder time supporting the children financially. It could also be an issue of education in contraceptive or family values in such communities. If black men were given the same economic opportunities whether they lived in Compton or Bel air, there might be difference in your statistics.

You shouldn't say black men... rather "African American".
I'm not originally from the United States so my father has always been and continues to be a strong influence in my life and I plan to do the same with my family.
If you take an African American studies class... you'll learn that slaves were broken apart from their families and anyone who even spoke their language or shared their cultures were taken away. Even when they got some stability in their new surroundings nothing protected those same slaves from being sold to someone else continuously and nothing protected them from killing anyone you got close o and started to bond with.
So when you go back 400 years in US history all the way to 1619 which is when slavery started and continue to break down the fundamentals of family for each and every black slave... you can see how that can hold serious repercussions even in our modern age the the point where family hold little to no values for those men.64 Reply
Asker+1 yI say black men. Most black men preferred to be called black, and not all black men have roots in Africa.
Aside from that you have an interesting point.- +1 y
Like I said... just say African American because black men signifies all black men and that makes you seem ignorant. Seeing how the percentage of the minority of black people in the US is so insignificant when compared to the entire world.
That's the actual reason... some people may say it's the socio-economic standard but this is the underlying root that people don't acknowledge since this is never though in a regular US or World History class. Unless you take an AAS class then you never realize anything about African or Slave history. - +1 y
On the contrary, out-of-wedlock birth rates among the African American community were down around 20% at the start of the last century, as opposed to 70% today. The trend has risen across the board for multiple races, but it was during the 60's and 70's that it really started accelerating at an alarming rate.
thesocietypages.org/.../maritaldecline.jpg
Looking at that graph, one is hard-pressed to blame these numbers on slavery. What one has to ask themselves is what was it that changed in the sixties and seventies in this country which caused this trend to pick up as it did. - +1 y
@KHaskins
There are actually numerous factors that can influence this pattern in today's age. I mainly stated the underlying root which gave rise to a significant lead in the African American society. In today's age... we have young teeangers having sex, and getting pregnant as early as middle school, along with a lower socioeconomic standing and to top it all off they lack the original family setting from an earlier generation to guide toward what's right.
Your data is showing a significant curve but not being married does not equate to a lack of presence in the family. It just states that the father is not with the mother.

Asker+1 yWhat about white women who they have kids with and abandon?
+1 yIt's really common for those in poverty who aren't ready for the responsiblity of a kid, mentally of financially. Also number of absent fathers is growing because more and more generations are growing up fatherless, which is a cowardly trait being passed on to the next generation.

+1 yWhy are you only focused on the black men that abandon their children? Would you be asking this question if the "statistics" stated otherwise? Do you care that other races have fathers that abandon their children? Or is it only a problem when black men do it? Why not ask why is there an alarming number of absent fathers period?

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yIt is said to stem from slavery. The family unit was often separated. Once freedom was granted, the trend of absentee fathers stayed. That's the dumbed down version of the theory.
11 Reply- +1 y
That theory is bullshit. Over eighty percent of births in the black community occurred within a marriage at the turn of the last century - comparable to statistics for whites. It was during the 60's and 70's that the trend of fatherlessness in the black community accelerated towards the 72% figure we see today.
