My boyfriend is letting himself go, what should I do?

Anonymous
My boyfriend and I have been together for a year now and I'm happy with him. What really starts to bother me though is that he is letting himself go a bit. After some months we met he started to gain weight and grow a beer belly. It didn't bother me first, it was barely visible and he was complaining himself, so I thought he will just get rid of it again. He is not doing any sports and he loves eating sugar. Otherwise he eats quite healthy but the chocolate, cookies and ice cream show up on his belly. Instead of getting back in shape it is getting worse and he already looks a bit pregnant. Maybe this is shallow of me, but we haven't been together that long and I'm not perfect either, but I'm making an effort to not gain weight at least and try to stay in shape. He is not responding well to my hints or even open critizism to become more healthy again. A beer belly is a huge turn off for me and I'm losing faith that it will get better. It's not only the belly itself its this impression of him completely letting himself go and I'm losing respect for him. I would appreciate your advise on that (guys and girls), as I don't know what to do anymore. He is already mad at me for hinting out that he might should avoid the sugar for a while...
