My boyfriend doesn't want to marry me because of my past? What should I do?

My boyfriend's is the only man I've ever loved, he helped me through the darkest period of my life and I want nothing more to marry and start a family with him. The problem is one of his friends recognised me and told him about my promiscuous past. My boyfriend has only ever slept with 2 other women, both of who he loved so I kept this hidden from him. He has this idea that marriage with a promiscuous women will fail so has given me an ultimatum. Either I stay with him with the understanding that he will never marry me or we end our relationship. He also says that he has to be upfront with me about the fact that he has reputation for being respectable and that if more people in the future recognize me as "someone they banged" he would break up with me. Leaving is absolutely not an option for me and I've begged him to change his mind but I don't know what to do next. It feels like I have to make an impossible choice.

I wouldn't agree to his ultimatum, I would sit down and write him a long ass letter (thought out) that explains your end of the story, your thoughts and feelings and reflections, why you couldn't tell him, how much you respect him for his values, how much you want to be good enough for him, and how hard it was to change your ways but that you did and thats what counts. and although it was hard (or maybe it wasn't... I don't know) that your lifestyle now is what you really want and you don't ever want to go back to your old ways.

Tell him that you apologize for putting a dent into his reputation, but that if he can't see past it... as much as it hurts you, you will know that he never truly loved your soul and all the tibulations and imperfections that life inevitably puts us all through. We all have something we aren't proud of, and if we don't we will in the future.
And just like he picked you up in your darkest moments, you would gladly do the same for him if he took the leap of faith and trusted in you and trusted that you would try your hardest to be the best wife and mother to his kids.

I would highly suggest writing it all out and thinking carefully of the words and flow, because conversations about hard topics can sometimes lead to hurtful words or arguments if you don't put in the effort to break them into manageable parts with many breaks to recollect and compose yourselves.

If you feel like your communication is really good, then I think you'll be fine.
The key is helping him through this, because I'm sure he loves you... but feels like he is undermining his values by marrying you. Show him that isn't the case, help him see it from a different perspective, and show him that you accept his values and wouldn't have it any other way. he just need to get over the shock and the images prolly that's passing through his mind

How is he treating you now after he found out about your past? Is it any different than before? If he's still treating you well (other than being upset about this issue) and you are happy being with him, then my thought is that you should consider staying with him but not pushing for marriage and see how things go. Maybe in time he'll start to feel differently. Apparently he still likes you enough that he's willing to stay with you (but just not get married), so that's probably a good sign. Some guys would probably have just ended the relationship immediately.

How long has it been since his friend told him about your past? If it's relatively recently he might still be dealing with that. I think I'd be pretty upset if I found out that my girlfriend had slept with a bunch of guys I know and was hiding that from me. That would make me feel like I'm not very special to her since she's not selective about what guys she has sex with and it would damage my trust in her because she had been hiding it. (My thought would be "what else is she hiding?")

It would take a while to get over that, but in time if I was happy with her otherwise and she showed me that from now on she would be open and honest and faithful and I was able to get to where I was confident that she was committed to me and wouldn't cheat on me, I'd likely still want to be with her.

It will probably take a while, but if you can show him that what you are now is not what you were in the past, I think in time there's a reasonable chance that he'll be able to let it go, but I think you will need to be patient and be sure not to do anything else to damage his trust or his confidence that you'll be faithful to him.

Consider it; he's probably wondering if it's possible for someone who's treated sex so lightly in the past to be satisfied with being with only one person for the rest of her life. He might wonder how often you're comparing him to past partners (and are disappointed), whether he'll be able to satisfy you, and a whole lot of other possible thoughts. It might not be a fact, but your history does broadly suggest that you might cheat at some point, and think nothing of it. That's what I would personally worry about anyway. At the very least, there is a risk that you'll suggest things like polyamory or open marriages at some point. It's like investing in a risky business.

That is a hard choice. First and foremost this is why you don't hide your past, it will come back to bite you in the ass. Now that its occurred what can you do to rectify it? You can show you have changed, you can explain why you did what you did, etc. in the hope of getting him to see that it was a mistake and that you have changed. You can stick around and hope that he will change his mind but if nothing changes then his view will not change. Promiscuity is wrong and damaging and being concerned about your past is reasonable HOWEVER its also reasonable to give people a chance. The guy seemed up front and honest so i don't think he is in the wrong here, he could have left when he found out you hid it from him. My opinion is that if he is willing to be with you but won't marry you , then he just wants to make sure he has a way out. I understand your point of view as well as his. My husband (who I met on this site) has only been with a handful of people but I have a past as well and even though my number is lower than yours, it was a high number to him and yes, he had a problem with it and he had to think about how he felt about it and it involved a lot of difficult talks but in the end, we both realized we can't live without eachother and we got married right away after meeting in person.
