First off, anyone can cheat in a long distance relationship: male or female.
With that being said, it's possible he's cheating... that doesn't even sound like a relationship if he's barely talking to you that much! That's not a relationship, that's him "checking in" every so often.

Yeah, you can do better. You can call him out on it if you want or ask him why he doesn't talk to you more. But honestly, I think you'd be better investing your time and energy in a man that talks and spends time with you on a regular basis.
