What makes people more than friends?

I'm not asking about friends with benefits! I'm asking for signs of people having sexual or romantic feelings for each other whilst being friends and (most likely) not acting on it.

Well, personally it was when I started to become vulnerable with that person on a level or real intimacy.

Like I talked about my parents divorce to her, and she was supportive and empathic. That made me start to feel real attraction to her instead of just boring physical attraction.

It didn't work out though because she was fucking my best friend at the time and they didn't want it out in the open. Previously occupied so to speak haha

So we stayed friends for a long time, but it was always a little weird and I had to be careful not to feel led on or let the attraction grow because it wasn't reciprocated and it's not right to blame her for it.
