Could his past have impacted his relationships?

My ex lost his mum at the age of 21 and his dad cheated and started a new family. His sister did him wrong and moved to a different country. He doesn't have contact with anyone.

Maybe because of this, he has never got too close to anyone and can cut them off easily and never look back. He is afraid of commitment and is a bit of an outsider/loner. There was a guy he was close to, but he died a few years ago (was a father figure to him).

I was the closest person to him, but still never felt like he was fully letting me in. I think he thinks everyone will eventually leave.

We are still in touch as friends.

I mean cut people off that are no good for him (bad influence). They are not true friends.

Maybe no one likes him because he is such as asshole?
