I think that's very sweet and respectful but it really depends on the girl and the kind of bond she shares with her father. If she's super close to her father and his approval matters to her, then yes. That would be perfect. If she's not that close or isn't that traditional, there's no need to ask father for his daughters hand
According to tradition in Europe family of the bride has to pay for wedding ceremony and is responsible for dowry. That's why potential groom has to as the head of family (usually the father) for hand of his daughter because if the father accepts he is responsible for these expanses as well. If family of the girl you want to marry doesn't care about this tradition, you don't have to ask. Or you ask just out of courtesy, if her father says no, you marry her anyway.
I say how it is in Europe because US culture is in major parts European. It's good possible if you don't ask a Mexican father, your corpse will hang skinless like in predator movies from highway bridge at some morning.
Ahhh memories... her Dad and I were sitting there drinking our Jack and Cokes and passing the weed pipe back and forth and he puts his arm around me and says, "I'm actually glad my daughter is going to marry a white man."
If you guessed that my wife and her parents are not white... you're normal.
If you imagined her Dad was Hitler and didn't even question if Nazis smoked weed... you're a progressive liberal.
I mean it’s what some people do. But honestly if she’s a adult she doesn’t need her dads permission. Does she?

I think that's a nice thing to do, as long as she has a good relationship with her parents. Though, it might do to ask whichever parent she's closer to. Like, for me, if I was in the situation, it would be much more meaningful if my mom was asked for her favor, because she's the one who is truly involved in me and my life.
But yeah, I think it would be a good thing to do.
Its a time honored tradition and is respectful, but like @Genie23 says, it depends on the father/daughter relationship.
I'm an old fashioned type. I asked my wife's father before I proposed to her, and he appreciated it. It can help establish a new level of respect between you and the future in-laws that you would otherwise miss out on.
Well my husband did the very honourable thing in asking my father both for his blessing, and for my hand in marriage.
Were you shelter as a child?
Why would you need yourbhusbad to ask your father for permission to marry you. You are an consenting adult.
@Inbox Excuse me im actully 30
@Alwayreckles93 It's based on tradition and respect, because many women today are narcissistic they don't understand why these things are so important. Typically if a man marries a women he's entering into the family built by that father.
@Vegasrunner and most parents no a fays are narcissistic. Kids do not owe anything to the parents.
*DAYS
@Vegasrunner what makes you think parents deserve special treatment? Do you have any idea how many kis get abused at home later once theki is older they are expected to respect their parents?
@Alwayreckles93 That certainly is a position that a narrccist would take however not really an arguable point as any adult understands the importance parents play in child development.
@Alwayreckles93 You believe respecting the people that have raised you is "special treatment" Yes as a matter of fact I do have an idea and it is significantly less than the amount of children that have productive positive home lives.
@Vegasrunner Maybe this lady isn't mature enough for marriage. Perhaps her parents should put her in a conservitetorship also put camaras in her room and a tracking device. How would you feel lets say you are in love with a beautiful 40 year old lady and you ask her hand for marriage you alredy in one need with your grandmothers antique ring and you ask her would you marry and she tells you Just wait let me ask my mommy and daddy firs. I mean how would that make you feel?
@Alwayreckles93 Not sure what gives you that impression about her but she seems mature enough to have selected a respectable husband. As for me personally I wouldn't get married and I certainly wouldn't get married to a 40 yro woman as that's much too old, also I think you have the process confused. The man ask the father for his blessing b4 asking for the woman's hand in marriage. With is a terrific idea as woman often make poor decisions when it comes to men and having a male figure that's going to be honest w/ you is probably the best way for them to avoid red flags.
@Vegasrunner 40 is not old where didnyou get that idea from? I have seen woman your age that look way more younger Nmand better then a 21 year old.
@Vegasrunner maybe she's crunchy and believes plastic and non organic food have chemicals.
@Alwayreckles93 40 is to old for me to be dating. That's great that you've selected found an exception but in general men prefer younger woman, once a woman starts getting around 30-35 her value declines and by 40 she doesn't really have any. Don't get me wrong I'll bang a 40 yro chick but I'm not going to be trying to settle down w/ a woman of that age.
Even if i allowed my dad to play a greater role in my life, i wouldn't care for the guy to ask his permission. Just propose or if you really wanted approval, ask the parent that was around, my mom
So much YES!!!
Glad to see that over half the guys still understand this. Guys and girls alike have to understand that a father is a woman's protector. That is his charge until she meets her husband and the father has to sign off on that. Any decent guys realizes and respects this fatherly duty. Regardless of whether the father approves it is the future husband's DUTY to convince him that he can have faith in his daughter's choice.
I think it's a sweet gesture, but at the same time, it feels very outdated to me. It could score you some brownie points, but I don't feel like it's really that necessary.
i like brownies :p
No one asked
@beebella you make the best brownies, mum
If we're talking about one of my daughters, better ask her mother! 😈
You: "Will you marry me?"
Her: "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. No."
Her dad: "Whoops, I already said yes"
Her: "Fuck"
I think it is the best way to arrange a marriage. It means we love and respect our parents, grandparents. If we seek blessings from our elders then chances are our marital life will be more successful.
Old fashioned but you join her family so it is a good idea to suck up.
I know ima do it, blessings are important to me, cause I want her family to get along with mine
In my case, it would be a no because I don't have a close relationship with him but traditionally for others it would be a yes if they don't have a dysfunctional relationship with their father.
No. But it's highly respectful to ask for his blessing. Because its his daughter, his baby girl.
Depends on her relationship with her father... I personally think it's cute as fuck, but I don't think it's necessarily needed
lol no, I'm going to do what I want regardless of what he says anyway so it would be an empty gesture.
Two adults if a grow old ass woman still needs her parents to make decisions for her then more likely she isn't ready for marriage.
YES... Man this world is ass backwards. It used to be that you didn't even *have* to ask the girl, you asked her father. Because her father was charged with the duty of projecting her virginity from perverts like Andrew and Tristan Tate, and me LOL.
Bro, I’m kidnapping that bitch like I’m Bowser taking her to another tucking castle if she’s Italian. Her dad is gonna be my Mario, and I’m gonna have my supervillain arc.
Of course not. We don't live in the times where women are their dad's property that he "gives away". She's a grown woman; you don't need her dad's permission to pop the question.
You should only do this if you've managed to time travel back to the 1930s or earlier. It is an ancient custom and is unnecessary in this day and age. Also, consider that if he says no it's going to be very awkward.
Yes, that's something that needs to happen.
Ask her father if he thinks she will sign a prenuptial agreement.
No, it’s just traditional. Noura’s parents of course would say no, but We both love each other. It’s none of our parents’ business that We’re planning to marry.
We lived together & she basically stated we’re getting married so I didn’t have to
I think it's the respectful thing to do. I asked my wife's parents
Now days it's more of a curtesy than actually asking for the blessing.
I'm not sure, honestly. I think so?
No, unless she is a minor.
100% you should. It's a sign of respect.
I've asked the surviving parent.
I did and he said no
This isn't 1925 any more..
Don't ever get married
no..
Ofc!
Nope
