Okay those are two different things. So, assuming nobody involved is breaching normativity:

It's completely okay to expect something. You can expect something good or bad. It's just our minds trying to predict the future. However, I do think it's not so socially beneficial to always say our expectations out loud. Especially when they involved other people doing things we'd prefer them to do. I think it's best to keep those expectations to ourselves as they're simply a subjective preference that the other person really don't have to abide by.

And if someone takes something back that they gave to someone else, then they never really gave it to them in the first place. They still feel like they hold dominion over it. They don't truly view the other person as an equal. They want to control them. Which is why they simply lent it & labeled it as a gift.

I think if you're keeping score that you don't really love that person. When you love someone it isn't contingent on what they do.

Unless that something is effort or it’s situational like you’re gifting them something for an anniversary then no. It’s most likely going to disappoint you if you expect something in return when it was solely your choice to give them something and that disappoint is going to build a resentment towards them when they’ve done nothing wrong.

Also taking back what you’ve already gifted just because of your mood change is an asshole move. I’d never accept gifts from a person like that because they’re not actually giving me a gift, they’re just giving me something they can keep hostage when I upset them

Gifting should be a selfless gesture of kindness, not transactional. That means making peace with the fact that if they don’t gift you something, or if they do gift and it’s not of equal/greater value, you will be fine with that. Also, I wouldn’t take all my gifts back because it’s not like they’re borrowing something, I gave it to them because that’s what felt right to do at that time.
