I don't think that applies till your a little bit more than boyfriend and girlfriend, however, if you are attending a party where you get food etc., in return. You shouldn't go empty handed.

get the idea of sharing money into your head. that's how living with someone in a serious relationship is. as for doing it before y'all are a couple living together, i say do it if you can, but don't feel obligated.
