Is it proper to ask for housewarming gifts?

My friend is moving to a new place, he texts me a gift list from Amazon. Then a few hours later he sends out a text if I don’t get him anything from the list he will take cash. Is this normal? I was under the assumption that people give when they are able to, want to, and have the funds. Not with a list being put in front of your face or someone directly asking for cash.

no people don’t normally ask for gifts. It’s up to the guest or he could say dinners on me whatever
