What do you think causes someone can be an extreme difference from their family?

We've all heard of the "black sheep" of the family. The "embarassment", etc.

But on the other hand there's people who are extraordinary examples of humanity while the rest of the family is selfish & self centered. My colleague is one of these. She is selfless, considerate of others, very friendly, etc. and yet her family is the almost complete opposite.

Growing up we usually try to make a point about certain things. I used to disagree with pretty much everything that my father used to say. Now that I'm in my 30s I feel like my way of thinking is getting similar to his way of thinking and I'm becoming more conservative with age.

Maybe she realised what crop people her family were and learnt to not be like them.
