What’s the difference with “Social” and “Sociable”?

Social = likes to be around or in groups of people. Someone whose social life plays a very big role in their lives. Generally, such people aren't happy alone or just being one-on-one with their partner - they want to "go out" and be around lots of people. Often have a need for lots of attention.

Sociable = someone who is COMFORTABLE in groups of people. They are easy-going in a group setting - they don't get panicked or anxious or overly bothered by being in a group of people, whether they know them or not. This doesn't necessarily mean they feel a NEED to be in a group all the time, just that they are comfortable when they are.

Leaving "Social" and "Sociable" aside, I prefer the description "Clubbable," a British word meaning someone who can easily be one of the lads or lasses, especially in a higher-status situation.

"Social" is more about the big picture of how people interact and live together, like social events or social issues. Think of it as the systems and structures of people being together. "Sociable" is all about the individual. It describes someone who enjoys being around other people and making friends. Easy as pie!

They get used interchangeably but "more social" suggests passive while "sociable" is more actively involved.

It's usually because it's "sociable" or "antisocial" to describe behaviour.
