If you could choose: short-lived romance or long-lasting friendship?

Imagine you meet the person of your life, the one where you say : everything is perfect, I could spend the rest of my life with him/her.

You can only choose one of two options:

1. A short-lived romance lasting only 3 months, where you get to experience everything you ever wanted, but you inevitably break up and will never see him/her again. He/she will only be present in your memories.

2. A long-lasting friendship. You never get to experience what you'd love to experience, but he/she will be a close friend for the rest of your life. You see him/her occasionally, but this also means seeing that person with a partner. He/she will be present in your everyday life, but there is a distance that you will never be able to close.

Which would you prefer and why?

Why does this distance exist? What causes it

I refer to emotional distance. Not being able to really be with that person. Hardly ever having the opportunity to spend time with him/her alone.

What I meant with the short lived romance is that you experience the relationship to its fullest. You are partners, even though after 3 months the relationship is over and no contact is possible after that.

What I mean with not being able to be near the person you have a long-lasting friendship with refers to emotional contact. Hanging out with her and with a group of friends is the norm. You can almost never be alone with her, make her feel special, spend some time that will be memorable to both of you.
