Would you like to be immortal, if it was offered to you?

The caveat is, you can't die even if you want to.

I read this short story, about a young woman who's talking to a very old man. Turns out the old dying man is her son, and the middle aged guy that arrives soon after it's her grandson.

The woman is immortal and young forever (it's not stated how she achieved that) but her family is not, so she has to watch them grow old and die. At the end she bitterly complains it wasn't worth it.

I always have a tired smile when I read that people would want to be immortal because believe me, you DON'T want to be immortal. People should think a little further than their noses before making that assumption, why?

The first and most important reason is that nowhere is it mentioned that the person is in a healthy condition. That means that theoretically you could be immortal, with no option to die even if that would be your most desired wish. You could have a debilitating cancer at a final stage that makes you suffer to such an extent that you only wish you could die because the pain is unbearable. But guess what? You can't because that was your wish to be immortal.

Or what about having all your friends and family die one after the other. Those that you loved above anything are leaving you every once in a while. Of course, you can say that you did not love them in return but that makes a hypocrite out of you.

Finally, what will happen to you in 3+ billion years when the sun engulfs the earth and everything on this planet dies... except you! Where will you go? It is not certain at all that humans will ever be able to populate an exoplanet.

People are already bored at age 16. Imagine being bored ad aeternam!

I don’t think I could deal with watching the earth be swallowed by the sun in 5 billion years though, so I’ll pass.

Dang I was going to say yes as long as I have the ability to die when I want to.

But, since that is the caveat I would have to say no.

I would want to be able to stop my immortality at some point I don't want to be stuck floating through space when the world ends for example. Or if I get disabled and can no longer move the rest of my body; if you don't have a healing factor along with your immortality this could happen eventually. I even once read that theoretically if a person lived hundreds or thousands of years our concept of time would be skewed causing us to process it much faster like months becoming minutes years becoming hours etc.

And to top it all off you would be lonely. Unless you had your soulmate become immortal with you so you had someone to share the great unknown of the future with I don't think immortality would be worth it especially if you can't eventually die. in my opinion

Immortality is an absolute curse . Look at the elder among us, they can't keep up with societal evolution, they are locked in a different time, it's just too much change to swallow. Now consider being alone in your generation. Live like that 100, 200, 500, 1000 years? Lose everyone that you love, your family, your kids, everyone will die around you. A thousand heartbreaks. It will be exponentially atrocious to live, loneliness, sorrow. Saturated. Broken soul.

Ah, the age-old question of immortality! As a relationship coach, I'm not sure being stuck forever watching loved ones age and leave would be the dream scenario 🥲. Watching everyone you care about walk out of your life while you remain? Total recipe for heartbreak. Sure, eternal youth and beauty sound fab, but what about love's expiration date? The idea has some superficial appeal, but I think anyone who seriously reflects on the repercussions of immortality will decide it's not such a grand idea.

Being immortal is not enough. I also have to save myself from being caught for the experiments by the government. For that, super powers will also be needed.

But after a time, maybe after 400-500 years, life becomes so boring that it becomes a curse. Maybe meditative slumber would help.

Immortality until you wish for death seems like a better deal compared to unlimited life

Nope I want to eventually die, thinking very far ahead to whenever the earth is hit by a huge meteorite and shatters earth to pieces you'll just endlessly float into space in long time suffering cause you can't breath but can't die either, that's of course not counting the fire wave and shockwave and stuff lol

the question for me is: do i still feel pain and suffereing like normal? i mean as in physically? and do i still age normal meaning my body gets more and more decomposed but i somehow don't die?

The psychological toll being immortal has on a person seeing your family friends loved ones and even pets pass away knowing there isn't anything you can do about it. The guilt survivors guilt the loneliness the ptsd the depression that comes with being immortal from seeing everyone you love and care about gone it's hell it's pure hell
